New from Pentax: Get a Grip with the KP DSLR

Blending a sleek design with versatile shooting capabilities, Pentax has released the KP DSLR, which is poised to be both the compact APS-C model in their DSLR lineup, as well as an apt performer for low-light shooting. Additionally, in typical Pentax fashion, the exterior of the body can be customized with a trio of grips for improved handling and it is weather resistant for use in harsh climates.

In terms of imaging specs, the KP uses a 24.3MP APS-C CMOS sensor, which omits the anti-aliasing filter from its design to achieve a high degree of sharpness and resolution. In-body 5-axis Shake Reduction II (SRII), which is commonly used to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 5 stops, also benefits the sensor by offering an AA Filter Simulator function to mimic the effects of an optical low-pass filter to reduce moiré and aliasing when needed. Also, the SR unit lends itself to capturing even more detailed files with Pixel Shift Resolution, where the sensor shifts in small increments in between exposures to gather increased color information and clarity, while also reducing noise. In addition to the sensor’s unique design, a PRIME IV image processor also enhances image quality by enabling a sensitivity range up to ISO 819200 for working in low light, and the processor also avails Full HD 1080p/30 video recording and 4K interval movie, as well as continuous shooting rates up to 7 fps, a 1/6000-second top mechanical shutter speed, and a top electronic shutter speed of 1/24,000-second.

Balancing the sensor and processor’s capabilities is one of Pentax’s main calling cards of camera design: robust, tough physical construction. While compact in stature, the KP does have a fully dustproof, weather-resistant build that is also cold resistant to temperatures as low as 14°. Beyond the camera’s durability is one of its most distinguishing features—an exchangeable, removable right-hand grip that can be swapped for one of three sizes to best suit various hand sizes. Available in Small, Medium, and Large sizes, these grips are easily attached to the body via a single captive hex screw, and all three sizes will be included with the KP upon launch. Among other physical attributes for which Pentax is known, the KP does feature a large 0.95x-magnification pentaprism optical viewfinder in addition to a 3.0" 920k-dot tilting LCD monitor, and built-in Wi-Fi is available for wireless image transfer and remote control via a smartphone or tablet.

Introduced alongside the KP DSLR is a host of matched accessories, including the D-BG7 Battery Grip, to provide extended shooting times and a more comfortable grip; an K-AC167U AC Adapter Kit to power the camera from an AC source for long-term continuous shooting; the CS-310 Cable Switch to remotely trigger the camera’s shutter; and a pair of fitted, protective cases: the O-CC90 Camera Case and the O-CC160 Camera Case.

Hi, I bought a Pentax Ks2 and had to return it because the wifi function did not work properly.  I think ks2 is the very first model come with wifi function, that is why it did not work well.  Do you think this new kp model has an improved wifi function?  I reall like this new kp model.

There's no confirmation yet, but general opinion is that currently Pentax is lagging behind in Wifi area, due to poor software (mobile app).

  • Small grip? Thank you Pentax... I actually moved from Canon to Pentax K-3 because of my tiny hands and I love am Pentax cameras! Am I correct in assuming that the KP dslr camera comes with a medium grip and, if the buyer wants large or small, they will need to purchase those as accessories?

The "In the Box" list for the KP actually includes all three grips and the hex wrench you'll need in order to change them.  So no additional purchase needed, except if you lose one.

It comes with all the various add on grips in the box. That way you can decide right away.

Outstanding news, thank you for confirming all three grips are in the box. I'm eagerly awaiting the release date. Low light shooting using all my current lenses, wow. Thank you Pentax. A ton of bang for mere enthusiast budgets, as usual. I love that Pentax again managed to give enthusiasts a durable and weather resist package.

As far as I understand there are 3 grips included in the package with KP. Small, medium and large (which goes well with the optional battery grip).
