Panasonic Reveals Leica DG Vario-Summilux 25-50mm f/1.7 ASPH. Micro Four Thirds Lens


With an eye toward professional photographers, videographers, and filmmakers, Panasonic has completed a premium Micro Four Thirds lens pairing, with the new Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Summilux 25-50mm f/1.7 APSH. lens. The new lens joins its stablemate, the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm f/1.7 ASPH. to give creators an expansive two-lens combination designed to work together seamlessly. The new lens features a 35mm equivalent 50-100mm focal length field of view with a constant wide f/1.7 maximum aperture, adding normal-telephoto focal lengths to the wider lens’s 20-50mm equivalent focal length and identical constant f/1.7 opening.

The new Leica DG Vario-Summilux 25-50mm f/1.7 APSH. features a stepless aperture control and controlled focus breathing to assist filmmakers with silent, unobtrusive operation. Precise manual focus is available using the focus ring clutch mechanism, and a linear autofocus motor keeps up with high-speed still photography and video, up to 240 fps. The optical mechanics achieve exceptional barycentric stability to minimize image shifts during zooming. When manually focusing, on the Panasonic LUMIX GH5, the focus ring can be set for nonlinear, linear, or variable rotation using the camera’s menus.

The lens, built to Leica Camera AG’s strict quality standards, features 16 elements in 11 groups with 1 aspherical lens, 3 extra-low dispersion lenses, and 1 UHR element. A close focusing distance of 1.02' at 50mm gives a 0.42x magnification (35mm equivalent). A 9-blade rounded aperture diaphragm is designed for pleasing out-of-focus highlight renderings. The lens, like its 10-25mm sibling, is dust, splash, and freeze resistant—able to operate in temperatures as low as 14°F.

Designed to be the longer half of a powerful zoom system, the new 25-50mm lens integrates effortlessly with the wider lens. The external dimensions of the two lenses are virtually identical, and the new lens shares all the critical design elements that have made the 10-25mm f/1.7 lens a favorite of Micro Four Thirds shooters everywhere. Used together, the lenses have unified color balance, consistent image quality, identical bokeh rendition, and resolution to support 4K video. Their identical centers of gravity and physical size make swapping lenses inside a video rig fast and easy.
