Panasonic FZ1000 II and ZS80

Sometimes the best tweaks are the smaller ones—especially if you are working with a product that was good from the start. This is the case with today’s launch of the Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ1000 II and DC-ZS80, both excellent point-and-shoots that come packed with features. The FZ1000 II continues to push forward with its larger design and high-quality 25-400mm equivalent lens, while the DC-ZS80 adheres to a pocket-friendly form factor and an impressive 24-720mm equivalent lens.

Kicking things off is the FZ1000 II, notable for its relatively large 20.1MP 1" High-Sensitivity MOS sensor that affords shooting in dimmer light, with improved performance. Combined with the Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 25-400mm equivalent f/2.8-4 zoom lens, you have a highly versatile package. This lens even gets an upgrade with a minimum aperture now reaching f/11 for better performance in bright light, or achieving deeper depth of field. Panasonic has always paired stills skills with video prowess, and the FZ1000 II offers UHD 4K recording at up to 30p, as well as various 4K PHOTO modes, that is now upgraded with Auto Marking to help you navigate all the frames and Sequence Composition to create a composition image using multiple images from the sequence.

Other features found in this super-zoom camera are new L.Monochrome and L.Monochrome D Photo Styles for creative shooting, Post Focus for adjusting focus points after the fact, and a Focus Stacking function. Light Speed AF uses Depth From Defocus tech to lock onto your subject quickly. As for the design, this remains somewhat untouched, with a 0.74x 0.39" 2.36m-dot OLED LVF and a 3.0" 1.24m-dot free-angle LCD that now offers touch functionality. There are now 13 Fn buttons, three of which are newly found on the lens and five in the touch control menu. And, it has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy for connecting directly to a mobile device.

The pocketable ZS80, available in Black or Silver, has a more conservative 20.3MP 1/2.3" MOS sensor with a seriously versatile Leica DC Vario-Elmar 30x zoom lens, equivalent to 24-720mm, that works for practically anything you might see as you travel. POWER O.I.S. stabilization is here to help minimize shake at those longer focal lengths, so you don’t have to drag a tripod along. Another surprising feature of such a compact camera is a 0.21" 2.33m-dot LVF alongside the rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot 180°-tilting touchscreen.

Beyond stills, the ZS80 offers UHD 4K video at 30p and Full HD at up to 60p, or 120p in a slow-motion mode. Depth From Defocus tech will make focusing easier and fast with AF-S support at up to 10 fps and AF-C at 5 fps, which is possible with raw recording. 4K PHOTO appears here with Auto Marking, just like the FZ1000 II, as well as Sequence Composition. Also, there are numerous Creative Modes for adding a bit of style to your images before you share them via the built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Are either of these point-and-shoots appealing to you? What do you think about their long lenses? Leave a comment below with your thoughts!
