BOSS Releases New Wireless Headphones and an Advanced Guitar Synth

The clever minds at BOSS have a flair for figuring out what sorts of gear guitar and bass players dig. From their classic stompboxes to their slick amplifiers, BOSS equipment can be found in rigs around the world. The newest additions to the BOSS family—the SY-1000 three-voice guitar/bass synthesizer and the Waza-Air wireless guitar headphones system—are sure to spur some inspiration and excitement in your live performances, recording sessions, and rehearsals.

Designed as BOSS’s flagship guitar/bass synth and modeling processor, the SY-1000 employs custom DSP and 32-bit / 48 kHz processing to deliver new levels of tone, expression, and control. It not only comes with refreshed versions of the OSC Synth, GR-300, E. Guitar, E. Bass, Acoustic, VIO Guitar, and Poly FX, but also empowers you with amps and effects ported from the GT-1000. Whereas many guitar synths can only provide one sound, the SY-1000 boasts three simultaneous instrument types, each offering pitch, level, and panning per string. Need different tunings from song to song? That’s no problem for the SY-1000.

The SY-1000’s new Dynamic Synth function incorporates ten oscillator waveforms and two 16-part step sequencers with pitch, filter, and amplitude settings that can evolve and follow the envelope of your guitar or bass. Considering that you can use three Dynamic Synths simultaneously, you can turn your guitar into a massive sonic soundscape churning with three oscillators and six step sequencers.

Thanks to its eight assignable footswitches, six control knobs, and large LCD screen, the SY-1000 is easy to operate. Extensive connectivity includes 5-pin MIDI I/O, support for four external footswitches or two expression pedals, configurable stereo main and sub outputs, a mono send and return effects loop, a 1/4" guitar input, a 13-pin GK pickup input, and a USB port. With the SY-1000 connected to your computer via USB, you can record each string to a separate track, play your favorite virtual instruments, track MIDI sequences, and more. You should note that a Roland GK-compatible pickup and 13-pin cable (both available separately) are required to take full advantage of the SY-1000’s comprehensive synth and modeling features.

As a guitar amp, the system provides five amplifier types inspired by the Katana Stage series, more than 50 effects, a tuner function, and wireless editing via your mobile device. Lastly, it includes a WL-T transmitter so you can play without cables. Seriously, ZERO cables are required.

Built-in batteries keep the components powered for hours, and the integrated gyro sensor and BOSS spatial technology allows the Waza-Air to track your head movements and create enhanced sonic realism through the application of dynamic localization and 3D ambience. So, it sounds as if you’re listening to an amp in the room even though it’s all coming through headphones. You can even stream tunes from your smartphone if you want to play along with pre-recorded tracks!
