Utilizing a design from the early 1960s by German-American physicist Oskar Heil, Klaus Heinz built a folded elastic diaphragm that was first used in ADAM Audio’s highly regarded studio monitor speakers. Klaus Heinz has since started his own company, Heinz Electrodynamic Designs, or HEDD, and further developed the folder ribbon tweeter. The Series ONE studio monitors include the next generation of this ground-breaking technology. There are models currently being offered, including the Type 05, Type 07, and the Type 30.
All three designs share a lot of the same technology, including the unibody-like casing with a thick, 38mm front panel, which is designed to be solid and remain stable and effortless even at the full capacity of the power amplifiers. The power amplifier module is built by a Danish manufacturer, ICEpower, which offers first-rate measurements, high efficiency, and excellent sound quality. The woofer is constructed from an Ultra-Honeycomb Composite (UHC), which is a unique honeycomb-sandwich material used for the diaphragm, proves to be extremely stiff, and increases the accuracy between the moving of the voice coils and the resulting oscillation of air pressure. This lowers side effects and allows the sound to become more transparent and three-dimensional.
The Type 05 is a small two-way nearfield monitor equipped with a single 6" UHC woofer and HEDD AMT tweeter, which combine to provide a frequency response of 45 Hz to 50 kHz (52 Hz to 20 kHz ± 1.5dB) and a maximum SPL of ≥111dB (per pair at 1m). Each of the drivers is powered by its own separate 50W amplifier. The rear panel offers a balanced XLR input and an unbalanced RCA input. Control potentiometers include gain, high shelf EQ (2 kHz), and low shelf EQ (200 Hz).
The Type 07 is a standard-sized two-way nearfield monitor equipped with a single 7" UHC woofer and AMT tweeter, which combine to provide a frequency response of 38 Hz to 50 kHz (52 Hz to 20 kHz ± 1.5dB) and a maximum SPL of ≥116 dB (per pair at 1m). Each driver is powered by its own separate 100W amplifier. Like the Type 05, the rear panel offers a balanced XLR input and an unbalanced RCA input. The potentiometers offered control gain, high shelf EQ (2 kHz), and low shelf EQ (200 Hz).
The Type 30 is designated as a midfield monitor and is the flagship model of the HEDD Series One studio monitor line. The three-way design incorporates two 7" woofers, a 4" midrange woofer, and the HEDD AMT tweeter, which combine to provide a frequency response of 32 Hz to 50 kHz (40 Hz to 20 kHz ± 1.5dB) and a maximum SPL of ≥126 dB (per pair at 1m). Each driver is powered by its own dedicated 300W amplifier (1200W total). Like the Type 05 and Type 07, the rear panel offers a balanced XLR input and an unbalanced RCA input. The potentiometers offered control gain, high shelf EQ (2 kHz), and low shelf EQ (200 Hz).
All three models offer a universal power supply, allowing them to work anywhere in the world. Another feature well worth mentioning is the inclusion of the optional Digital/HEDD Bridge cards, which install easily into the blank panel on the rear of the monitors. The HEDD Bridge cards offer a variety of solutions for many digital platforms including AES/EBU and “Audio-over-IP” protocols such as Dante and Ravenna Network/AES67. Additional cards are slated for release in 2016 including USB2 and Wireless.
