The latest explosion of new software from PreSonus will come as a welcome shock to creators in music and video production, whether in your home or at the studio. From plug-in emulations of classic analog equipment to bold innovations in functionality, PreSonus aims to make what you do easier, more inspiring, and sonically pleasing by offering a host of new Fat Channel plug-ins and the impressive Studio One 4. Old habits and new tricks can coexist and flourish with the expanse of features just a click or two away.
Let's start with the shape-shifting elephant in the room, Studio One 4. Unlike some programs, its flexibility allows it to be configured to suit your style rather than requiring you to change your workflow for it. It's available for download or as a boxed version, in Artist and Professional editions. Of course, a variety of upgrades and cross-grades are possible. Both Artist and Professional editions share strong foundational elements, such as an intuitive single-window environment, simple drag-and-drop operations, multi-touch support, unlimited audio and instrument tracks, advanced automation features, and integration with Notion scoring software. Artist includes 31 native effects and the Professional packs in 37; both have five power-virtual instruments, ranging from the Mai Tai polyphonic analog synthesizer to the Presence XT sampler with a 14GB library. In addition to drum machine/sequencer-style patterns, Studio One 4 brings the new Impact XT and SampleOne XT instruments, which offer beat- and loop-based production styles and features built specifically for producers and beatmakers in EDM and hip-hop. When it comes to speeding up your workflow, use the default key commands, select presets based upon Pro Tools, Cubase, Sonar, and Logic, or create your own! You get compatibility with ASIO, Windows Audio, and Core Audio devices and support for AU, VST2, VST3, and ReWire. There's even bi-directional SoundCloud integration and accommodation for audio at up to 384 kHz!
Studio One 4 Professional's list of extras is grand. Its native 64-bit resolution, Console Shaper analog console emulation, Mix Engine FX, and VCA faders provide incredible audio quality and processing flexibility. Chord Tracks, Scratch Pads in an Arranger Track, and multi-instrument chains open fast options for experimentation in your productions. You can correct the pitch and timing of vocals efficiently, via the Melodyne Essentials 4 editor, without leaving your session. Collaboration with users of Pro Tools, Logic, Nuendo, Final Cut, and Premiere is streamlined, thanks to AAF support. After all the sequencing, tracking, editing, and mixing is done, pop into the integrated mastering suite to finalize your mix files. It boasts automatic versioning, DDP creation, Redbook CD burning, and digital release!
Consider the new Fat Channel plug-ins as the perfect complement to Studio One. There are 15 of them, available individually or in bundles. Choose from seven EQs—the Alpine 550-EQ, the Baxandall EQ, the RC-500 EQ, the Solar 69 EQ, The Tube Midrange EQ, the Vintage 3-Band EQ, and the VT1 EQ—to suit your 2-, 3-, and 4-band desires. Additionally, peruse the variety of compressors—Brit Comp, Classic Comp, Comp 160, Everest C100A, FC670 Comp, RC500 Comp, The Tube P1B Comp, and VT1 Comp—for vintage flavors and control. The names and faces of these plug-ins hint strongly to their sources of inspiration; I'm sure you can guess them!
It doesn't matter if you're a producer who has just found your calling, or a veteran mix engineer, you can trust that the new PreSonus Studio One 4 and Fat Channel plug-ins will deliver sound quality beyond satisfying and a workflow you can love.
