Waldorf: kb37 Eurorack Keyboard Controller

0Share

Originally founded in 1988, Waldorf has been synonymous with cutting-edge synthesizers for nearly 30 years. With its lineage in hardware and software synthesizers, it came as a pleasant surprise to see Waldorf embrace the Eurorack modular format by creating four Eurorack modules and the kb37 Eurorack controller keyboard.

The kb37 is a compact and rugged performance instrument capable of housing up to 107 HP of modules in its conveniently angled panel that sits atop the professional-quality Fatar TP9 keyboard. The controller features a high-resolution 16-bit CV interface that is temperature stable and provides extremely flexible control of your modules. MIDI channels are programable and make the kb37 an ideal choice for studio and stage.

The built-in power supply provides all the necessary power to accommodate the module frame with bus backplane. The bus board provides an internal power connection for any Eurorack module. The upper left corner of the controller features the CV panel with 3.5mm jacks and buttons for several control voltage signals including gate output, pitch cv, clock output for syncing devices, a reset output, note velocity CV, aftertouch CV, and three control buttons with outputs that are assignable via MIDI CC messages. There are also CV outputs for sensor, Pitchbend, and the modulation wheel.

The upper right corner houses the audio panel and features left/mono and right input jacks from modules with a dedicated level control for the audio output jack on the rear panel. Additionally, there is an independent ¼" headphone output with its own level control. The bottom left of the controller features the control panel, which provides access to various functions, including note priority switch, glide knob, gate trigger mode, octave switch, tempo control for the clock generator, and built-in arpeggiator, as well as the Pitchbend and modulation wheels.

The rear panel offers stereo ¼" audio outputs, MIDI In/Out/Thru ports, a USB port for host connection, a sensor input, and a sustain pedal input. Many synthesizer enthusiasts have recognized the Eurorack as a huge playground for sound design, where collecting modules can be like a “fun addition.” The kb37 offers an excellent entry point into the world of Eurorack.
