Have you heard about the Canon VIXIA GX10? Well we here at B&H Photo have, and we are excited to announce it. The VIXIA lineup has grown over the years from a simple handheld camcorder to an HD shooting powerhouse, and the new GX10 ups its game to shoot UHD 4K. Much more than just a consumer camcorder, the GX10 incorporates features that are more often found in professional cinema cameras than what you would expect to find in a consumer camcorder. Yet even with its advances, the GX10 still hasn’t left behind the advantages of its consumer camcorder roots. Utilizing the advantages of a built-in lens, it incorporates a 15x zoom providing you with tremendous reach without the size and weight limitations of an interchangeable lens system, so you can get that wide shot, and then zoom in to get that close-up of the moment.

Sporting Dual Pixel CMOS AF, a feature found on the Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II,  the GX10 provides a highly accurate and responsive autofocus system that allows you to keep focus where you want it on your image. The lens maintains UHD resolution throughout its zoom range, and incorporates a 9-blade iris, often prized in digital cinema lenses for contributing to natural looking bokeh. The camera features both an electronic viewfinder and a 3.5” flip-out touch panel LCD. To handle processing of your 4K images, the GX10 harnesses the power of dual DIGIC DV6 image processors. This enables slow and fast motion recording as well as being able to output high quality footage. You can record your UHD 4K footage to dual SD card slots without dropping frames, and if you need to record in HD instead, the camera allows that as well. The built-in HDMI 2.0 port supports outputting 4K UHD video at 60p, so you can watch your footage on a monitor that supports 3820 x 2160 at 60p straight from the camera.

The VIXIA GX10 is a camera with roots in the consumer world, but that aspires towards the professional, and is an exciting option to consider.

I have owned the Canon Vixia HF G30 for about 4 years now. It has been my workhorse and shoots great HD 1080P video. Although the image stabilization is very bad, I still love the camera because as a nature photographer, I shoot nearly all my videos on a heavy tripod (Sachtler Ace) and its 1080p stuff looks really good.

When Sony came out with the RX 10iii I bought it because of the slo mo speeds (240 fps good …480 fps poor … and 960 fps very bad). But the 4k +600mm lens blew me away. I have not touched the old G30 since I got the RX10 (and I have not shot a single still picture through it in the 6 months I have had it … I have shot over 2500 video clips with it). It is awkward to use and has made me dream of Canon introducing a Vixia HF G50 with all the goodies of the G30 & 40 and 4k capability.

It looks like this Vixia GX 10 is their answer.

Looks sweet, but I am DISGUSTED that they did not put a 20X lens on it.

15X just does not cut it for bird videography or many other wildlife videos. Did I say I am DISGUSTED? Yes, and DISAPPOINTED, and downright ANGRY.

I have waited impatiently for this camera for nearly 2 years now and when it comes, the lens is a DEAL-BREAKER.

Oh well … looks like I’ll have to wait another year or so. I hope Sony or Panasonic will make a good offering (they have several nice 4K items now but nothing in that midrange prosumer class that I want).

Canon, if you are listening … please, please, please put a 20X (or blow me away with a 25 or 30X lens) on this camera when you upgrade it.

Great video demonstration guys!

This video came up at the right time I was looking for something like this camera.
