The New Canon 70 – 200mm Cine Zoom Lens

2Share

Just in time for NAB 2017 comes the Canon 70 – 200mm T4.4 zoom lens in EF mount. Covering the Super35mm format and weighing slightly more than two-and-three-quarter pounds, this lens is a bit longer than 7 inches and covers commonly used focal lengths, maintaining a constant T4.4 over the entire zoom range. As you would expect from a cine lens, this one is parfocal, which means that focus does not shift as you change focal length (zoom). Fitting into Canon’s lineup of cinema lenses, the 70 – 200 matches the color characteristics of Canon’s other cine lenses for better intercutting. This lens is suitable for creating a 4K image on a Super35mm sensor, providing consistent image quality across the zoom range.

Zoom, focus, and iris are all servo controllable, and the lens is compatible with broadcast-style servo controllers, as well as an available ZSG-C10 zoom servo grip for shoulder-mounted/ENG operation. Compatible with EF mount cinema cameras such as the Cinema EOS C700, C300 Mark II, and C100 Mark II, the lens allows you to take advantage of Continuous AF, One-shot AF, and Focus Guide. Additional EF compatible features include: remote control of zoom, focus and iris via camera, REC Start/Stop from ZSG-C10 Grip Unit, peripheral illumination correction, chromatic aberration correction, lens meta data record, T Number/F Number display select. Incorporating a 9-blade click-less iris with manual, auto, and closing capability, the lens communicates with and draws power from your camera with an EF mount.

With this new 70 to 200mm servo zoom lens, Canon expands not only its lineup of cinema zooms, but provides you with a versatile tool that features Canon’s renowned optics, manual and servo control, with optional accessories and a cinema look in a small, lightweight package.

Does anyone know if this lens series will work with the Blackmagic EF URSA camera or is it locked to Canon?

Hi Mike -

Sure can - no problem.  Use it with this zoom grip:

Designed specifically for use with CN-E COMPACT-SERVO lenses, the Canon ZSG-C10 Zoom Grip adds an ENG-style operation to your camera setup. It has an ergonomic form factor for comfortable operation and features a seesaw rocker for zoom control, as well as REC start/stop and ONE-SHOT AF buttons. Because the grip provides electronic control for the drive unit, rather than mechanically driving the lens itself, you can choose to mount it directly to the side of the lens (using an included screw-on rosette) or mount it to an ARRI standard rosette elsewhere on your shoulder rig, as long as the 20-pin cable is still connected to the lens drive unit.:

* Image Stabilization, Autofocus, and Auto Iris functions are enabled with the following compatible camera models only: Canon’s Cinema EOS C100 Mark II, EOS C300 Mark II and EOS C700. To enable these features, these camera models will require a firmware update that is scheduled to be released in the second half of 2017.
