Atomos announces two 7" on-camera monitors/recorders that feature HDR, 10-bit panels, and 1500 nit brightness: the Shogun Flame and Ninja Flame. Improving on the field-tested Shogun and Ninja Assassin, while retaining their familiar form factor, interface, and recording capabilities, the Shogun Flame and Ninja Flame are powerhouses designed to improve your workflow. Each unit supports DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) and UHD 4K (3840 x 2160), as well as HD video, scaling the input to 1920 x 1080 for display.
These two recorder/monitors inherit the same features and family boundaries from the Shogun and Ninja Assassin, supporting HD and 4K. The differences between the units are that the Shogun Flame supports 12G SDI, as well as raw and HDMI, with XLR audio inputs; the Ninja Flame supports HDMI and incorporates a 3.5mm stereo mini jack for audio. The Shogun Flame is well suited for broadcast workflows, while the Ninja Flame appeals more to the DSLR and mirrorless crowd that doesn’t need support for SDI or raw workflows.
"The 10-bit panel and AtomHDR display technology offers a brightness range of more than 10 stops, allowing the monitors to display HDR (log) footage natively without having to compress your video’s dynamic range or present it as a washed-out image within a Rec. 709 color space."
The 10-bit panel and AtomHDR display technology offers a brightness range of more than 10 stops, allowing the monitors to display HDR (log) footage natively without having to compress your video’s dynamic range or present it as a washed-out image within a Rec. 709 color space. The AtomHDR system leaves color space unaffected, and uses its expanded brightness and contrast range to display various log formats accurately—such as S-Log 2/3, C-Log 1/2, V-Log, and J-Log—without having to use a third-party LUT. Plus, your HDR selection only affects the displayed image; your recorded files are unaffected by your display choices.
If you wish, you can still monitor in Rec. 709 using the High Bright mode, which utilizes the monitor’s 1500 nit brightness (four times brighter than most monitors) to allow you to monitor outdoors without a sun hood. For HDR viewing, the included sun hood is required, because displaying a wider brightness range reduces the overall brightness of the monitor.
In addition to the attention-grabbing 10-bit panel and HDR display, both units include protective armor with silicone-covered corners, a redesigned chassis that moves the power plug to the back, and dual battery plates that support hot-swapping for continuous power. Two batteries are included, along with a 3x fast charger and an HPRC hard case. Not to be forgotten is the 4K or HD recording to SSDs using ProRes or DNxHR codecs at 4:2:2 at 10-bit.
Audio isn’t forgotten either—both units support adjustable mic levels with their inputs. The Shogun Flame, with its balanced XLR inputs (via an included breakout cable) for recording audio from a mic or mixer, provides clean audio for a guide track or as your source audio. Likewise, the Ninja Flame can take an input from a mic or wireless and record with adjustable audio levels, allowing you to bypass the normally limited audio recording capability of a DSLR or Mirrorless camera. This allows you to avoid post-syncing your audio to picture, and capture audio to the same file you are recording in your Ninja Flame.
Atomos has raised the bar with these new monitor/recorder packages, designed to meet the rigors of everyday production, and simplify your workflow.

Received this unit today. It seems that with the BMPC 4k only HD works. Is this the case?
The Blackmagic Production Camera 4k has a 6G-SDI output. You should be able to record UHD 4K from it.
Thanks!
