The Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit from Westcott is a kit that includes everything you need to shoot 1-light portraits except the speedlight itself.

The Rapid Box is a light modifier that provides soft, even light right from your speedlight. A tilting 5/8" receiver stand mount/shoe mount/speed ring combo is included to attach your speedlight to the octa box. It disengages quickly from the box allowing it to close like an umbrella.

A 1.0 stop diffusion panel is included, as is a deflector plate. The diffusion panel is removable, revealing a highly reflective, high-output silver interior. When the deflector plate is in place it mimics the light of a large beauty dish, adding versatility to your lighting options. To tie this kit together, an 8' light stand is included to hold your octa box and speedlight in place.

Robust and Durable
The Rapid Box's poles and speed ring are constructed from solid aluminum to minimize weight yet retain durability.
Round Catchlights
Octa boxes produce round catchlights in the subject's eyes, which appear more natural than square or rectangular catchlights.
Quick Setup and Tear Down
The Rapid Box opens and closes like an umbrella, no support rods or adapter ring needed.
Sleek and Compact
With a shallow depth, the Rapid Box works in virtually any lighting situation.
Soft Even Lighting
A screw-in reflector plate will minimize any hot spots, and the front diffusion material further diffuses the light for softer portrait light.
Fully Adjustable Stand Bracket
The height and depth are adjustable and compatible with virtually all shoe-mounted flashes, except Sony speedlights.
Utilize Your Speedlight Without the Need for Radio Triggers
External speedlight placement allows firing via built-in slaves and/or IR line-of-site.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Consider whether you need the kit I'll review the softbox itself separately (on the page for the separate item), and focus here on whether you need the kit. There are basically two parts to that decision the lightstand and the deflector plate. In short: the stand is not terrible. The plastic clips are a little flimsy and I'm a little worried about their long term use, but they're not horrible or falling right off (unlike some cheap gear I've gotten). The stand is light-duty, but appropriate for the weight of the rapid box plus a pretty decent-size flash. I didn't have any worries about putting it to full height and tipping the bracket downward at least, indoors. Also, if you are space-constrained, you can use the legs at less than full extension to fit into a tighter space. That obviously makes it a bit less stable, but good enough in many situations. The deflector plate is another story. I've seen many comments calling this a basic necessity and lamenting that it isn't just included. It definitely *is* annoyingly overpriced at $$stand-alone, but if you are using this as a softbox, it produces a strong center shadow. For even light, what you need instead is a push-on (Sto-Fen type) diffuser for your flash (or, failing that, at least flip down the wide-angle panel). The deflector plate is really only for when you actually want to emulate a beauty dish. So, bottom line: if you're in need of a light-duty lightstand, this is a fine way to get it and you basically get the beauty dish deflector plate for free. Or alternately, if you want the deflector plate anyway, you get the stand for only about ten bucks more. But if you don't really want or need either, just get the softbox alone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from pleased for the money I have used the Rapid Box several times for outdoor portraits. It is very easy to set up, really a matter of minutes to have everything up and ready to use. I like the carrying case for the soft box, would like to have one for the light stand as well. Design wise, it seems a little weak where the actual box connects to the flash bracket, basically one self tightening nut that holds everything in place. It was pretty loose the first time I used it, but a little fixing at home and it seems to be fine now. Using the soft box is a big step forward in terms of quality of light when compared to an off camera flash with a diffuser.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy, fast and excellent results I shoot a lot of models outside and was looking for quick set up to use as fill flash. I was amazed by the Westcott RapidBox. Set up was quick and easy, less than 2 minutes. The engineers at Westcott really know what a photogrpaher wants. And the results, I shoot my Canon 600 EX RT off camera with a TTL sync cord. The fill lighting is superb. I loved the results so much, I just ordered the XXL RapidBox. Highly recommend the Westcott products to everyone. Randy V. Canon 5DM3, 7D, 60D and a multitude of lenses

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It broke after two (2) uses - Rivet came out A rivet broke holding one of the metal rods on the 2nd use. It's rather delicate and I'm not surprised it didn't last long even with careful use. I won't buy this product again. I called Wescott and they don't offer replacement rivets and want me to send it back which is nice but I can't use such a delicate piece of equipment. I need equipment that does not break the 2nd time you use it

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Instructions would be helpful TheOctaBox is just fine--good product, well built and opens and closes easily. There have been comments about the quality of the stand. Yes, it is not a great stand, but it works and as part of the kit, worth it. The real question, in my mind, has to do with metal defuser. The instructions (a label on the defuser) say put the convex side to the flash. If you do that and use the cloth defuser, you will have a black spot in the center of the cloth. If you reverse the metal that black spot is gone. When asking reps from Rapid Box, you may get told as I was, not to use both the metal and cloth defuser together. You will not get that answer from all of the Reps. You will have to decide for yourself.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Should have bought one a long time ago This is a soft box that sets up even faster than a conventional umbrella, yet gives much more controlled light. Its weight and size are very manageable by an assistant, even dangling over railings or perched overhead. The light quality is wonderfully soft and wrapping, and can easily be pushed very close to the model with good results. The light stand is far from stellar, the tripod being stubborn to raise and lower, but is completely functional, and light weight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny. I purchased this to balance with daylight, and get a nice soft even fill for shadows. I havent used it much so far, but for when i have, its worked very nice. Ive never used off camera lighting before, so it took some messing around with to understand how it would effect images, but so far i love it. The only negative is it seems a little like a cheap rain umbrella. Scared it might tear.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent softbox with some chintzy accessories. I'm going to echo what some of the other reviewers of this item have said. When I purchased it, I knew I was going to need an additional light stand to mount it, so I bought it the full kit. The softbox itself is a breeze to set up and seems relatively well constructed - in the past three weeks, I have taken it to five locations, two of which were outdoors, and have been very pleased with its build quality so far. The diffusion panel is also pleasantly quick to mount. The light stand is another story. The stand is very light, which means it's easy to carry (hooray!), but feels a bit top-heavy once you stick the softbox and a flash on it (oops). Put it in a strong breeze and it can become a problem. Additionally, two of the screws on the bracket were not well machined, so it was very difficult for me to mount the softbox the first time, and I'm still unable to adequately secure the flash to the cold shoe. Now I'm looking at replacing the shoe. As for the diffusion plate... to be honest, I have not been using it. I've either been using it in situations where there's a second flash & umbrella and some decent ambient light, or using it as an off-camera fill flash. In these situations, you're not going to need the diffusion plate anyway, but it's not as if the center is going to be particularly blown out, especially not with the spokes of the umbrella in the way. To sum up - if you already have a light stand, or are sure you're going to need something that can take a beating, skip out on the kit and just go with the Rapid Box itself, which is a great product. If you don't mind cheaping out a bit on the accessories, go for the full kit. (This photo is from a headshot session I did for a middle school's drama club. Note the Extremely Fancy Bulletin Board Paper I used because I didn't have a seamless background.)
