Vello RFW-LR overview

  • 1Description

The FreeWave LR Wireless Flash Trigger and Remote Control from Vello is a versatile, reliable remote control kit that will trigger off-camera flash units and studio lights from up to 600' away. The 2.4 GHz frequency provides reduced radio interference and an extended range without the need for line-of-sight alignment as the radio waves will pass through some walls, windows, and floors. The system is compatible with most major manufacturers' shoe-mount flashes which offer manual power control. Pentax, Sony/Minolta, and Sony Multi-Interface Shoe flash units are not compatible.

Eight different channels let you trigger only chosen specific receivers, or an "all channels" button will trigger all receivers simultaneously. The transmitter's tilting joint allows it to be mounted vertically or horizontally onto your camera's hot shoe.

An included 3.5 to 3.5mm sync cable connects the trigger to a studio flash. A 3.5mm to 1/4" mono plug adapter is also included for flashes with a 1/4" mono plug socket.
A hot shoe on the trigger allows for mounting the flash directly to the trigger.
Mount the trigger to any 1/4"-20 threaded stud or standard cold shoe.
The transmitter features a metal foot for durability.
A carrying pouch with an external and internal pocket protects your transmitter and receiver when not in use.
Two lanyards allow you to hang the transmitter and receiver from light stands or other equipment.

    Vello RFW-LR reviews

FreeWave LR Wireless Flash Trigger and Receiver Kit is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 79.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Deliver as expected This is my first trigger and I am just starting on the out-of-camera flash world. As it does not support ETTL you have to play with the camera and flash in manual which is fine for me as I am learning. Package seems nice and the product well manufactured. It includes batteries, a pouch and some cables for using it with studio lights. Set up was easy and well explained in the attached instructions and so far has been working flawlessly. Once you understand what you are buying and its features, for me is a good value for the price paid. Time will tell if reliability is an issue or not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Gear!! These freewave flash triggers work great!! I use 2 Pentax AF-540 FGZ speed lights with my Pentax K-5 and they do what they made for. I am really enjoying this product. Thay are well made, light weight, have Sync cables, pouch, lanyards, their range is HUGE!! BUT, I found that this item does not work with Flash Sync Speed over 1/160 sec. Maybe it is so just with Pentax. Anyway, for me Flash Sync Speed 1/160 is enough. I have got another instrument to get Flash Sync Speed more then 1/250 sec. For the more, this trigger system is the best way to save money. It is cheap and really good!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding product This product works exactly as described. Very easy to use, the build quality is amazing especially for the low price, and it reliably fires every time. A few times I thought it failed to trigger the strobes, but it turns out my strobes take a long time to recharge, so it was my fault. This may explain the scant few negative reviews for this product. I wish it had an integrated clamp to attach to a light stand, but I can jury rig something for less than a dollar. Certainly not worthy of reducing the review from 5 stars. Also, my first time ordering from BH Photo. Shipping was first rate. Arrived rocket fast and properly packed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect solution for a shooter like me. Great results using this kit! Inside the studio, the skateparks outdoor/indoor, all those random places like 600' down the beach or even concealed in a custom waterproof case swimming in the waves I can wirelessly fire flashes up to 1/250sec. There is little setup time, well built, have plenty of channels to fire multiple flashes, also the ability to choose from firing a single flash, selecting specific flashes to be fired or fire up to 8 flashes at once all controlled from the transmitter. The best wireless flash solution I found. Within budget, this kit and two (2) additional Vello FreeWave LR receivers were purchased for less than a single PocketWizzard unit, but most importantly it is all compatibility with the gear I own. Vello FreeWave LR units use AA batteries! My Flashes use AA batteries and some of my cameras can use AA batteries, this makes it easy when traveling to pick up a box of batteries if needed, or pop in some freshly charged AA batteries that I already carry in my camera bag. Other unsatisfactory wireless units I have used in the past used AAA, 123, or some other strange batteries making it hard to find them when on the go or to remember to charge them. Also can be powered by DC power, great for a studio setting. The build quality, weatherproofing and design. They feel and look top quality! Plastic yes, but are there any that are not? And for a plastic body they feel solid. Weatherproofing, I wouldn't use them in the rain, neither would I shoot my flashes in the rain. The design is nice, a bit bulky but small enough to fit into my bag with my other gear. The layout of buttons is simple and easy to figure out. I like how the transmitter can tilt. The 1/4 20 treads on the Receiver makes it nice to mount to a tripod, monopod, umbrella or other systems. The Hot Shoe locking mechanism has a solid build and mounts nicely. Safety leash on the Receiver for tethering the units to just about anything! Bonus nice little soft case. Flashes I have used with this kit. (2) Canon 430ez speedlite flashes 300ez speedlite sunpak auto522 thyristor (pole flash) No need to buy new flashes! Using these flashes with Canon eos 1nrs, eos 7d mark2 and the Samsmung nx500 bodies, and the Vello FreeWave LR kit I wirelessly light up a subjects at 10fps, though I have only synced the Samsung NX500 up to 1/125 sec. so far... Im impressed I can use my canon flashes with the nx500 using the Vello FreeWave LR kit. I shoot these Camera bodies. Film camera bodies: Canon eos 1NRS Canon eos Elan Canon eos rebel xs Digital cameras bodies Canon eos 1d Canon eos 1d mark II Canon eos 7d Canon eos 7d mark II Canon digital rebel t3 Samsung NX500 mirrorless camera Don't forget they come with a 1 year Warranty! Great kit!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vello makes great products Everything I've gotten from Vello so far has been great. I had bought an even cheaper flash trigger (Cowboy Studios), because I rarely needed them. Obviously, you get what you pay for. Vello makes RELIABLE products @ much more affordable prices than their competitors. Not ETTL, but at this price point you really can't expect it. I do 95% of my work in manual anyhow. To me, ETTL is only good when flash is on camera and time is limited. Vello makes a slightly cheaper set, but the range is only 150ft, with this model it's 650 ft. I have been in one room with the trigger, and it fired the flash anywhere in my house including through walls. I have had limited use with these but I am confident they will continue to work fine. I have never had an issue with Vello.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Price, Works Fine I use this to trigger my studio monolights. The transmitter goes on my camera and is not too heavy or bulky. The reciever goes on one of the monolights, using the included cord to hang it on the handle so it does not have to dangle from the sync cord. The sync cord includes a 1/4 plug adapter which plugs into the sync terminal. Only one reciever is needed because the flash activates the optical slave on the other light. I've used them on the past two weekends, and they are very nice. I formerly activated both monolights by using an on camera flash unit, but using the trigger is lighter, doesn't wear out my flash unit, and I don't have to wait for the on camera flash to recycle before taking another shot.
