SJCAM SJ4000 Overview

Designed for point-of-view style action shooting, the black SJ4000 Action Camera from SJCAM records 1080p video and takes 12MP still photos. It features an assortment of mounts to cover just about every situation, including solutions for helmets, handlebars, surfboards, and more.

The camera also features an underwater housing that, with a 100' depth rating, is safe to take snorkeling or on many dives. A 2" LCD screen on the back of the camera allows you to compose your shots as well as review what you've already recorded.

The camera records to microSD and microSDHC memory cards up to 32GB in capacity. It records H.264 video in a .mov type file and offers 720p, VGA (848 x 480), and QVGA (640 x 480) settings in addition to 1080p Full HD. A USB port allows you to transfer footage to a computer, and there is a streaming function so you can use the camera as a webcam.

SJCam Support is... well, awful.

Never used it or saw it used. I got it to give as a gift a few months after purchase to a friend who does lake conservation... and they had problems right out of the box. 1) The menu was different than what was in the manual, some stuff wasn't where it should be, etc. 2) There's a prominent part of the manual about updating the camera firmware ... but the URL it gives is broken. 3) I emailed their web team about the URL, who directed me to support. They told me that I should pay attention to the manual because the camera doesn't support firmware updates... when the manual sent me to them for firmware updates. 4) I opened a ticket on the SJCam Support Site specifically for the menu & other issues. They replied with a few questions, and I responded. They haven't responded since - that was almost a month ago. Might be good as a camera, but it's a little expensive as a paperweight.

For its price, you get the best value for your money. It does not have those bells and whistles but just turn it on and go. When you get home, you will find that you got the images that you need.

Low quality, choppy capture, low refresh rate

It might as well be 180P or more accurately, VHS quality picture. The refresh rate is extremely low for an action cam. It could never capture enough frames to interpret any form of action whatsoever. The picture stills are also of low quality. The processor is so slow that video capture is choppy at best. There are chunks of freeze frame in every attempt to capture. I know, it's a cheap camera, so what could I expect? Well, I expected more than what we used to get on those old first gen Flip knock offs. Yeah, it's that bad. The same quality we used to get from a generic non HD pocket camcorder from 15 years ago. I want to be nice, but I also want to be totally honest.

Works great underwater & everywhere else

I have been filming swim meets for many years, and use this for my underwater shots. The video quality is great, and equals or surpasses my $400 Go Pro. I also give this to the students in the stands at sporting events to pass around and film what they choose. I get some great footage doing that, and the video quality is excellent. So, I bought another one and am using both. Great little cam, especially at this price. The underwater footage is amazing.

I have used one of these for several years filming swimming meets underwater footage. Great picture quality and good sound even in the enclosed case. So I bought another one just because I like it so much. Also had a Go Pro Black priced at $400 and this just as good as the Go Pro. So I sold the Go Pro and have been using the sj 4000 ever since. Exceptional camera, especially at this price. Totally recommended.

Is there a polarize filter that fits this camera? I want to film in a desert setting where there is lots of reflected light off the surface.

Unfortunately, B&H does not have any filter holders for the SJCam. However, if you internet search, there is the Hot Aluminium Protective cage Metal SJCAM SJ4000 Housing Case. It will take this Hoya Polarizer that we do sell.
