Building on the success of the original Ultravid HD, Leica's 10x42 Ultravid HD Plus Binocular adds improved technologies and materials to create an optical device with bright and clear images across the entire field of view. The HD Plus delivers enhanced contrast and true color fidelity, with virtually zero distortion, even in low-light conditions. Helping compensate for the visually distracting hand-shake common with using 10x and greater optics, is a wide angle 63° apparent viewing angle. This allows the use of high magnification binoculars without the need for stabilization equipment like harnesses or tripods.

Leica upgraded the glass to specially formulated SCHOTT HT glass which increases light transmission especially in the blue-violet light band, improves color fidelity, and enhances low-light performance. Scratch and abrasion-resistant High Durable Coating (HDC), and hydrophobic AquaDura coating on outer lens protect surfaces and causes water and oil to bead off for easier cleaning and clearer vision. The roof prisms feature P40 phase-correction and the proprietary High Lux System (HLS) coatings. These coatings virtually eliminate chromatic aberration for enhanced color rendition and increased contrast.

Complementing the optical performance are uncompromising construction details. To reduce user fatigue during long glassing sessions, the chassis is made of a lightweight yet durable magnesium alloy, with a titanium center hinge axle. The optical tubes are nitrogen-filled for fogproof performance and sealed to make the binocular submersible to 16.4' or 0.5 bar of pressure. Ergonomic thumb indents on the bottom of the binocular coupled with protective rubber armoring provide a comfortable slip-resistant grip. A lubrication-free focus system provides fast and precise focusing, with PETP-Discs to provide smooth movement throughout the broad operating temperature range.

10x42 Ultravid HD Plus Binocular is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stellar performer I did considerable research and testing before making my final decision on a new pair of binoculars to bring with me on a tour of the Western United States. I compared views side by side when it was possible. I tried several versions of Swarovski, Zeiss, and Vortex, in addition to other Leica offerings. In my opinion the Leica Ultravids were the best overall offering, and I chose these 10x42's for the added magnification and superior color rendition. First, the Flourite glass is the main difference. Fluorite glass renders colors far better than ED glass regardless of the various coatings and 'new' science all manufacturers claim. I have considerable optical experience using binoculars, telescopes, and very high end photographic glass as well. These binoculars have given me the most outstanding views of wildlife, as well as handheld astronomical observations I have EVER experienced. It is almost as if you can see what the animal is thinking. The second highly important factor is the functionality of the diopter adjustment. The Leicas have all the rest beat in this area hands down. Their adjustment is smooth, easy to adjust, and locks in place. The Leica's small form factor is also a strong plus - the Zeiss' are just too bulky and long and the Swarovskis simply too heavy. There is a bit of barrel distortion on the Leica's which some may be aware of if they have done the research, as well as purple and green fringing in certain circumstances. The color fringing is a result of the Flourite glass and is well known. An easy tradeoff for me considering the far superior color rendition in all other circumstances. Excellent in low light, astonishing image quality, FAST focus ring, outstanding rubber armoring, waterproof and easy to clean, and all in a very small form factor for 42mm objectives. There aren't enough good things to say, I absolutely love this product, and will never forget the Golden Eagles, Peregrine, Balds, Elk, Grizzly and Black Bear, Pronghorns, Bison, Wolf, and countless other views. And don't forget to turn them on the sky after dark !! I genuinely feel lucky to own this pair of glasses. If cost is a factor, check the Vortex's, the best value for high-quality construction and optical performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love these binoculars I was moving up from a Nikon Superior E and wanted compactness, brightness and sharpness. Returned my Zeiss Victory SF T* as they did not seem worth the extra cost and the case and lens caps were not easy to work around. The Leica image seems as bright and sharp. The body is shorter, less weight and easy to hold. The body seems better built too (the Zeiss had exposed seems in the rubber on the body which might separate with use). The Leica has tethered front lens caps and the case is easier to access with one buckle (the Zeiss case required two zippers and a magnetic strap to be undone before grabbing the glass. Just returned froma week on the Maine coast and LOVE these binoculars.
