Leica Ultravid HD-Plus 7x42 Overview

Building on the success of the original Ultravid HD, Leica's 7x42 Ultravid HD-Plus Binoculars add improved technologies and materials to create an optic with bright and clear images across the entire field of view. The HD-Plus binoculars deliver enhanced contrast and true color fidelity, with virtually zero distortion, even in low-light conditions.

Leica upgraded the glass to specially formulated SCHOTT HT glass, which increases light transmission especially in the blue-violet light band, improves color fidelity, and enhances low-light performance. Scratch- and abrasion-resistant High Durable Coating (HDC) and hydrophobic AquaDura coating on the outer lenses protect surfaces and cause water and oil to bead off for easier cleaning and clearer vision. The roof prisms feature P40 phase correction and proprietary High Lux System (HLS) coatings. These coatings virtually eliminate chromatic aberration for enhanced color rendition and increased contrast.

Complementing the optical performance are uncompromising construction details. To reduce user fatigue during long glassing sessions, the chassis is made of a lightweight yet durable magnesium alloy, with a titanium center hinge axle. The optical tubes are nitrogen filled for fogproof performance and sealed to make the binoculars submersible to 16.4' or 0.5 bar of pressure. Ergonomic thumb indents on the bottom of the binoculars coupled with protective rubber armoring provide a comfortable slip-resistant grip. A lubrication-free focus system provides fast and precise focusing, with PETP-Discs to provide smooth movement throughout the broad operating temperature range.

Leica Ultravid HD-Plus 7x42 Reviews

Great image quality but don't lose eyecaps!

I like my Leica Ultravid HD-Plus binos – the image quality is excellent! They are great at night in particular and not too heavy. I had to secure the eyecaps to the body to tighter silicone rubber rings using Nite Eze ties that end in a rubber ball on each end. This prevent eyecaps slipping off and make the attachment more comfortable when wearing these binos on my chest. I like my Leica Ultravid HD-Plus binos for image quality (yes, expensive), but prefer to take with me more compact and much less expensive but still very good Vortex Diamondback HD binos when traveling and hiking.

Great bins for pelagic bird watching

I have owned seven pair of Leica binoculars over the years - I have two pair of the older 10x42 Trinoids, one pair of the 8x42 Ultravids, and a pair of the 8x42 Noctivids. As I have gotten older I find that I can't hold 8 or 10 power binoculars steadily enough on a boat to use them effectively - I do a lot of pelagic birding trips in Hawaii. Recently bought these for this years pelagic season, and have now used them twice - super bins for the task. Bright, totally indestructible, easy to clean, light weight , super field of view and with the power a lot deeper depth of field than 8s or 10s, always a good thing on the high seas. I bought these for a specific task - my Noctivids focus much closer and have more power, so they are still my daily bins. As a field ornithologist I can justify all of these task specific bins - I have had only one breakage in 45 years in the field with Leicas, and I swear by the brand and the company service. Thanks B&H, service as always was smooth and efficient.

Do you find the close focus distance limiting?

Do you find the close focus distance limiting?
Asked by: Luca
So the Minimum Focusing Distance is 10.8' / 3.3 m. So I would say so. It would really matter for what you are using these for.

question

hello work well for astronomy?
Asked by: sergio b.
I have not used the Leica binoculars for that purpose. The are terrific for wildlife and birds. I dont think 7 or 8 power is adequate for astronomy.
