Leica HD-Plus overview

  • 1Description

Building on the success of the original Ultravid HD, Leica's 7x42 Ultravid HD-Plus Binocular adds improved technologies and materials to create an optic with bright and clear images across the entire field of view. The HD-Plus delivers enhanced contrast and true color fidelity, with virtually zero distortion, even in low-light conditions.

Leica upgraded the glass to specially formulated SCHOTT HT glass, which increases light transmission especially in the blue-violet light band, improves color fidelity, and enhances low-light performance. Scratch- and abrasion-resistant High Durable Coating (HDC) and hydrophobic AquaDura coating on the outer lenses protect surfaces and cause water and oil to bead off for easier cleaning and clearer vision. The roof prisms feature P40 phase correction and proprietary High Lux System (HLS) coatings. These coatings virtually eliminate chromatic aberration for enhanced color rendition and increased contrast.

Complementing the optical performance are uncompromising construction details. To reduce user fatigue during long glassing sessions, the chassis is made of a lightweight yet durable magnesium alloy, with a titanium center hinge axle. The optical tubes are nitrogen filled for fogproof performance and sealed to make the binocular submersible to 16.4' or 0.5 bar of pressure. Ergonomic thumb indents on the bottom of the binocular coupled with protective rubber armoring provide a comfortable slip-resistant grip. A lubrication-free focus system provides fast and precise focusing, with PETP-Discs to provide smooth movement throughout the broad operating temperature range.

    Leica HD-Plus reviews

7x42 Ultravid HD Plus Binocular is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional view I bought these to replace a 1999 Leica Trinovid 7x42 BA that was stolen. I can tell you that they are noticeably brighter than the old Trinovids, and I cannot detect any chromatic abbreviation, even when looking at stars or the moon. Depth of field is also fantastic. They are also lighter weight than the former models. Expensive, but they deliver an exceptional view. I also have a Nikon Premier LX 8x32, which is on par with the Leicas except for depth of field, where the Leicas easily beat out the Nikons.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Last pair I'll ever have to buy... Wasn't completely sure about the 7x magnification vs 8x, but it turns out that that's not an issue at all - it's almost impossible to tell the difference between my old 8x42 Opticrons and this wrt magnification. What I do notice is that the depth of field with the 7x is far superior to the 8x. Once you're roughly in the focus zone, you hardly have to touch the focus ring. The second very real benefit is that the image is much more stable - much less hand-held wobble compared to the 8x (and dramatically less than my other 10x). That means that your view of your subject is more stable and thus more visible. The third real advantage is that in lower light, these things really come alive - the image is substantially brighter and clearer than the 8x even when it's getting quite dark. This makes a real difference, although in fairness, it's only apparent in lower light - in bright daylight (when your pupils are contracted) this isn't so apparent. Then, you're simply left with the fantastic image quality of the Leica lenses and coatings. I tried these against the nearest Zeiss equivalent 8x Victories, and whilst (realistically) the image quality was ballpark as good, the Leica pair fit my large hands much more comfortably, despite the fact they're smaller. That, combined with the advantages of the 7x magnification made the choice easy for me. I'm very content with my choice.
