Leica Ultravid HD-Plus 8x42 Overview

Building on the success of the original Ultravid HD, Leica's 8x42 Ultravid HD-Plus Binoculars add improved technologies and materials to create an optic with bright and clear images across the entire field of view. The HD-Plus binoculars deliver enhanced contrast and true color fidelity, with virtually zero distortion, even in low-light conditions.

Leica upgraded the glass to specially formulated SCHOTT HT glass, which increases light transmission especially in the blue-violet light band, improves color fidelity, and enhances low-light performance. Scratch- and abrasion-resistant High Durable Coating (HDC) and hydrophobic AquaDura coating on the outer lenses protect surfaces and cause water and oil to bead off for easier cleaning and clearer vision. The roof prisms feature P40 phase correction and proprietary High Lux System (HLS) coatings. These coatings virtually eliminate chromatic aberration for enhanced color rendition and increased contrast.

Complementing the optical performance are uncompromising construction details. To reduce user fatigue during long glassing sessions, the chassis is made of a lightweight yet durable magnesium alloy, with a titanium center hinge axle. The optical tubes are nitrogen filled for fogproof performance and sealed to make the binoculars submersible to 16.4' or 0.5 bar of pressure. Ergonomic thumb indents on the bottom of the binoculars coupled with protective rubber armoring provide a comfortable slip-resistant grip. A lubrication-free focus system provides fast and precise focusing, with PETP-Discs to provide smooth movement throughout the broad operating temperature range.

Leica Ultravid HD-Plus 8x42 Reviews

Love my new Leicas

The first time I went birding with my new Leica Ultravid HD + 8x42 binoculars was a revelation. They have incredible sharpness, rich colors, sharpness of contrast, and the brightness were game changing. Awesome binoculars. The ordering process was easy and the expedited shipping were a plus.

Just upgraded from my previous birding binoculars. These are awesome. Had some low profile ones but now I had the chance to buy this pair and I love them. They are light and compact, with awesome close focus to watch birds at close range. Ready for more birding adventures during and after covid2019!!!

Unmatchable in humid jungle rainforest

I had been carrying a 8x50 Steiner Merlin which served me very well. Love the glass and its ergonomics. However, they were too big. Additionally, I needed binoculars which could handle extreme humidity, sudden monsoon type rains, river crossings and not fog up. I also needed a lighter smaller form factor to carry on foot and in my Maxpedition Falcon-III backpack. I was also unwilling to compromise on the glass after making substantial investment to get on location. I was pleasantly surprised to find the Ultravid 8x42 HD Plus highly compact, yet rugged, and crisp glass under diminishing light. Thrilled to get them into the field.

Uncompromising Clarity & Construction

After much research and trying Swarovski; Zeiss; Vortex; and Nikon, these were hands down the best binoculars for me. They are light, well built, and really bright. The clarity and color rendition is truly amazing! The ability to see birds in thick foliage and pick out fine details in the feathers is also nothing short of amazing. My wife and I were looking for binoculars to travel with, and I felt these best met my criteria for ruggedness, light weight, and optical clarity. We like to hike and climb (Yellowstone, Glacier, Yosemite, etc.). I looked at both the 8X and !0X versions of the brands previously noted, and settled on the 8X. The 8X were easier to hold steady. The other brands mentioned were also incredible and buyers really will not go wrong with any of them. However, for myself the Swarovski binoculars were too heavy, the Zeiss too big, the Vortex and Nikon were nice but didn't feel as well balanced as the Leica Ultravid HD Plus. It is great to have so many high quality choices! Also the eye relief on the Leica binoculars was perfect, especially for those who wear glasses. They are rather expensive, but worth it to me.

Ultravid 8 x 32

I have tried several top binos for birding and found this Leica to have, hands down the best depth of field. It is full size but feels compact, comfortable with good grip and snap focusing. The case is adequate for storage but not practical for the field as it is not weather proof and has no pocket for cleaning items. However, not a significant factor as the Leica is waterproof. Ocular Lens caps are acceptable but annoying as they attached to the strap. This are just minor nit picking observations. For my purpose of use they are perfect and I could not be more satisfied with the quality, finish and function.

Only used them for one birding walk but I’m extremely happy with my choice. The image is crystal clear despite my think eyeglasses.

question

Would you explain the difference between the Leica 8X42 ultravid and the 8X42 noctivid? Are either armored?
Asked by: Anonymous
The Ultravid HD-Plus is indeed based on an older mechanical and optical design that has been around for a long time. Its a true and tested performer. The Noctivid is Leica's newest optical and mechanical designs which many individuals at Leica Camera, Inc, worked on for over 6 years before introducing. It shows numerous easily noticeable improvements in performance over not only our existing Ultravid designs, but arguably has been referred to as the new performance benchmark for all. The Ultravid line is complete with 8 different models of full sized binoculars in 32 mm, 42 mm, and 50 mm objective lens models, while the Noctivid is only available in 8x42 and 10x42 models. Comparing apples to apples between the Leica 8x42 Ultravid HD-Plus, and the Leica 8x42 Noctivid binoculars, one immediately appreciates the Noctivids closer focus (almost 5 feet closer than the Ultravid product, down to near 6 feet) as well as the Noctivid's very obvious wider field-of-view (443 feet versus 389 feet at 1,000 yards). Especially when comparing in challenging lighting, the Noctivids superior light delivery is easily demonstrable and since delivered at very high transmission across the entire visible spectrum, the Noctivids high dynamic range lends itself to a seemingly unparalleled depth of focus front to back that offers amazing eye comfort. This feature also lends itself to a very quick focus system. With so much of the field from 50 feet to infinity in focus or near focus so at once, most users find they barely have to refocus and adjustments being made are mere degrees on the focus wheel. This means you are spending more time appreciating your subject in focus and less time trying to get the subject in focus.
