Designed for use by sportscasters, the THS 4 Talkback Headphone Box and Sports Announcer Console from Whirlwind features separate main and talkback XLR microphone outputs, with a latching switch that controls the main mic output, and momentary switch for the talkback output, which mutes the main mic output. Additionally, a momentary cough switch can be used to silence the mic for use in its namesake application. The unit can provide 36V phantom power for condenser microphones.
The THS 4's headphone section features 2 inputs, each with an XLR and 1/4" connector, with each input being able to be assigned to left, right, or both ears, and with individual input volume controls and dip switches to route the input signals to each ear. Input signals can be either balanced mono or unbalanced stereo. A rear-panel switch selects the proper mode.

What is the difference between this box and the THS3? They look the same except the knobs are labeled different.
The difference between the Whirlwind THS 3 Talkback Headphone Box and Sports Announcer Console with Left/Right Headphone Volume Controls and the Whirlwind THS 4 Talkback Headphone Box and Sports Announcer Console with Individual Input Volume Controls is the way the signal is routed and how the rotary controls affect the signal. On the THS 3, the left volume control is used to adjust the volume of the left earpiece and the right volume control is used to adjust the volume of the right earpiece. The controls on the THS 4 are used to adjust the input volume levels for input 1 and input 2 before the signal feeds to the input assignment switches. The controls on the THS 3 affect the volume level after the signal passes through the input assignment switches. The input assignment switches for both the THS 3 and THS 4 allow you to configure the routing for the two channels and select whether the audio signal is sent to the left earpiece, right earpiece, or to both earpieces.

Do you need two boxes for the producer to talk to the talent or can you simply plug a microphone into one of the XLR inputs to talk to talent?
A producer’s mic is normally sent through an aux buss on the console and then sent to the talent. You cannot plug a mic in as the inputs on the THS series are line level.
