Nikon 300mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

The AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR from Nikon is a innovative lens designed to maximize performance with high-resolution full-frame cameras. Nikon combines a Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element with an Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element to produce a reduced size lens that weighs in at 1.6 lb and delivers markedly clear imaging with virtually no chromatic aberration or ghosting.

Outdoor and nature shooters will appreciate the application of a Nano Crystal Coat to the lens elements to minimize flare and the fluorine coating on the front element that thwarts degradation of the image by dust or inclement weather. Action shooters as well as anyone who's fond of quick, responsive gear will be impressed by the combination of the Silent Wave Motor AF system and Vibration Reduction that provides an image stabilizing effect of 4.5 stops faster shutter speed. The lens' f/4 maximum aperture renders striking background blur that's further enhanced by a rounded nine-blade diaphragm. Compatibility with most Nikon teleconverters intensifies the effect as well as extending the 300mm f/4E PF ED's reach for sports and wildlife photographers.

Speed, light weight, reduced size, and features that fulfill a long technological wish list make the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR a lens Nikon shooters will crave for their kit.

Phase Fresnel lens achieves maximum sharpness and clarity with virtually no chromatic aberration or ghosting
Fluorine coating on the front lens element effectively repels dust, water, grease, or dirt, ensuring easy cleaning
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for up to 4.5 shutter speed stops, benefitting this lens' use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sports and Action VR mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions
Silent Wave Motor autofocus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance.
Full-time manual focus override allows instant switching between AF and MF focusing systems by just rotating the focus ring at any time
Internal focusing design maintains the overall lens length during operation and contributes to a lighter overall weight of just 1.6 lb
A highly accurate electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism ensures consistent exposures, especially when shooting at high frame rates
A Nano Crystal Coat has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting

Nikon 300mm f/4.0 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR Lens is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 107.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sharpness in a remarkably small size. This lens is amazing, the size and weight is just about half of it's predecessor and the sharpness is remarkable. I was lucky yo get one first time to be perfect, with no decentering problem which is pretty common with Nikon lenses. (Sometimes I had to send it back 2-3 times to get a good one but I got lucky this time.) I am extremely pleased with this lens which takes all the Nikon tele extenders real well with hardly any noticeable loss of sharpness wide open which just about disappears stopping it down to the next f/stop. Highly recommend this lens which is not a problem to carry around all the long even with the extenders.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lenses can not get much better than this. I had the old Nikon 300mm f/4 lens which was excellent, but a bit large and heavy. This lens is a dream come true for me. Small, light weight, extremely sharp even wide open and has outstanding performance with all the Nikon tele extenders. I have the TC-14E III, TC-17E II, TC-20E III and I am more than happy with the performance with all three on this 300mm lens. With the 1.4x there is absolutely no image quality loss, and with the other 2 it is so minimal that with a touch of extra sharpening is excellent. I am extremely happy with this lens, Nikon definitely made a Home Run with this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so good I have been shooting the local wildlife with TC 1.7X and the 300 mm VR. The slow speed VR problem is likely to remain something that will not often bother me since I use faster speeds for animals. I am quite impressed with the resolution with a D800 or D810 and the TC 1.7X. The attached Cooper's Hawk is a good example in my back yard. After a bit of practice on the Tucson AZ wildlife I can't wait to take it out on a animal photography trip. The lens gives me about 500 mm potential in a relatively light package. Sweet and with a couple of TCs a package that is lighter than some of the equivalent FL zooms. This is the lens I wanted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tack sharp, works with all Nikon TCs I've tried this lens a week ago indoor and outdoor. The lens is tack sharp and focuses fast. With the TC-14EIII there's no difference in focusing speed (Nikon D750). With the TC-17 there's a little slow down but not important, even for tracking birds in flight. With the TC-20EIII there's a marginal slowdown in focusing in good light, a bigger slowdown in a cloudy day.In any case, sharpness is not effected with the TC-14 and a TC-17. With the TC-20, there's a marginal degradation but it's useful anyway. The lens is surprisingly light weighted and a pleasure to use. When shooting into bright light (or sun directly) the lens drops substantially in contrast, and creates a rainbow of flare when the sun is in or very close to the frame.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best wildlife lens I have ever used. After a long time with Olympus, my birding companions convinced me to try Nikon and the 300mm PF ED VR Lens. I previously used an Olympus OM-D E-M1 MkII and a 300mm f/4 Pro lens. My birding companions were taking the same photos I was and the clarity of their images was superior to mine. I decided to go Nikon and get the same lens - 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens. I have read there is some concern about the Phase Fresnel construction of the lens. I have noticed no flare or any other anomaly, even in challenging lighting conditions. The light weight and compact size make it ideal. My only disappointment is that Nikon does not include the tripod ring with the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works.... I have been using this lens for about six months on a D800 and, at times, on a D300; the serial number is over 205101. My primary use has been outdoors for nature photography. Performance is as hoped. It's light weight and easily managed. Shots are great. The trick is that it is optically 300mm and needs to be handled as you might handle a 3OO mm lens. MPK61's review below seems to reflect an experience close to mine. No, this lens doesn't produce images as well as my tripod mounted 600mm f/4....but It didn't cost close to $10,000 and can be easily grabbed from camera bag or carried at my hip while I lug the big glass around. The accompanying image was hand-held with VR on as follows: D800, AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4E PF ED VR; f/4, 1/100s, 400 ISO.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A very practical 300mm that you can carry all day Pros:This is a sharp lens (it's just not as sharp as Nikon's $ version).Amazingly lightweight, short and practical to carry.Cons:It has a somewhat unprofessional feel, from so much plastic. Unfortunately that's the general manufacturing trend these days. Also, don't assume that vibration reduction will work perfectly in every situation. Try to keep the shutter speed high (increasing the ISO a little, if necessary). I generally switch on VR as a last resort.I'd rate this lens 4.5 stars. I can't give it 5, because of the plastic feel and the very minor sharpness reduction (compared to the f2.8 version).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My copy is STELLAR I am a full time pro with 30 years experience. I currently shoot with Nikon, but when digital came into the picture, shot with Canon for almost 5 years (2003-2007). My copy of this lens is outstanding. Three reasons why I am totally psyched with this lens. 1) Very lightweight 2) Sharp @f/4.0 and 3) Incredibly close focussing capability. While not a micro lens, when focussed at it's min distance (4'6), the field of view is approximately 3 x 5 inches. To me, this is incredibly useful. While others have reported VR issues at shutter speeds between 1/30 - 1/160, my copy displays zero image degradation at those or any speeds. Build quality appears to be great. At the date of this review, May 2, 2015, I've owned this lens for 5 days and have make hundreds of images and the lens has been a valuable tool. Should anything change, I'll update.
