Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom Overview

The Misfit Atom 4 x 5.65" / 4 x 4" Ultra Lightweight 2-Stage Clip-On Matte Box from Bright Tangerine is a small, lightweight yet strong, clamp-on matte box for lenses with an outer diameter of up to 114mm. It holds up to two 4 x 4" or 4 x 5.65" filters without using filter trays, and provides a wide field of view suitable for many wide-angle lenses even with two filters mounted.

The removable flexible hood is built to hold its shape over time, even in temperature extremes. The matte box with hood weighs in at under 7 ounces, only 3.5 ounces without the hood. This makes the matte box suitable for use with gimbals and Steadicams, and the removable hood makes the matte box an excellent choice for aerial shooting.

Made of aluminum, stainless steel, and an elasto polymer, the Misfit Atom is designed to be extremely strong and lightweight. It clamps on lenses with an outer diameter of 114mm, or smaller if you use step up adapter rings, not included. To prevent the matte box from rotating while you focus or zoom, be certain to use lenses with an internal focus design.
You can securely insert up to two 4 x 4", 4 x 5.65", or a combination of those filters directly into the matte box without using a filter tray. A spring-loaded clamp at the top of the matte box secures the filters so they will not fall out unexpectedly.
The Misfit Atom supports shooting with wide-angle lenses such as the Cooke 14mm and RED Pro Zooms at 5K.

Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom Reviews

Great matte box for an amazing price

I wanted to buy this matte box for a while before I actually went for it. My favorite feature is the ability to stack up to two filters at once while still having an extremely lightweight product. The rubber feels very sturdy and from other reviews, it apparently doesn't break with time.

This is great if you only need a couple of filters...

I'm running Sony FX with built-in ND so this was perfect for adding 4x5 filters. If you need complicated filter combinations, have a look at the other BT offerings. I have the Kick and it's also fantastic. You can't go wrong with BT matte boxes.

Best Clip on Matte Box

the soft style matte box had me a bit on the fence but the weight and convenience of this setup is perfect, I often avoid a matte box due to the bulk on some projects, but this is always easy and ready to go.

Super light but don't stack up filters!!!

I loved this matte box, when I worked at an agency, and I used it a lot so I bought one for myself with the antireflective tilt. That was supposed to be helpful also giving much extra room for filters but turned out to be a awful!! Make sure you don't stack the filters up because it has broken two of my filters already in two different shoots! This never happened to me at the agency and I got real mad when it happened in my personal project with my personal gear!

Does the job

It is as described, lightweight & simple.

It's great. . . but darn expensive for what it is.

I really like this system a lot, but I think it's too expensive.

Great for gimbals/Steadicam

I bought this on sale so I feel like the price was great for a piece of Bight Tangerine gear. Really love it and I'm sure it will become an important piece of my kit. Pros: -Love that you can take off the rubber piece and hunt for lens flares -Very light weight so it's great for a small gimbal or compact rig -Can rail mount if you want with an optional accessory -Has a top flag that can be purchased separately Cons: -Pretty pricy if it's not on sale -Clip on can be a bit janky -Putting two filters in this feels wrong (glass on glass) -This isn't really a matte box, it's a filter holder Key takeaway: If you need a compact filter holder that offers a little bit of flare protection, this is the product for you. If you need a lightweight matte box, there are better options out there in the same price range. Buy this is you're hunting for lens flares and still need a filter, if you're using a gimbal, or if you're flying it on a Steadicam.

Lightweight Versatile Mattebox

I bought the misfit atom to have a lightweight travel matte box that I can clamp on to stills lenses (82MM) or small cine lenses (95mm & 114mm). I also purchased the BT carbon fiber top flag to control unwanted flair when shooting in backlight situations. The top flag is just the right size (not too large to travel with or too small to control flares). The ability to remove the rubber lens shade makes it easy to pack away for travel in a backpack. The 114mm clamp with adapters rings (82mm & 95mm) covers most lens setups I have. I haven't used it to stack filters but works well for single filters. I compared this to other mini matte boxes and this one worked the best for my needs not requiring proprietary filters, working with up to 114mm lenses and the larger top flag. I also own the BT Misfit which is great for studio work but I use the atom more often as it is very packable and light weight.

Do I need to buy two filter holders if I want to be able to use the mattebox with filters or can I attach them directly to the mattebox?
Asked by: Camila F.
From the B&H Overview regarding this matte box: You can securely insert up to two 4x4 , 4x5.65 , or a combination of those filters directly into the matte box without using a filter tray. A spring-loaded clamp at the top of the matte box secures the filters so they will not fall out unexpectedly.

How does this compare to the lightweight matte boxes from small rig or tilta in terms of quality, function, ease of use?
Asked by: Derek
The tangerine misfit atom matte box is of good quality, and easy to use. It can lock onto rails or just mount onto lens. Filters fit well, and are held in secure with a top clip. The front shade is of rubber, it's not as cool looking as carbon fiber. Seems once a year it goes on sale, 4.5 out of 5.
