The VideoMic Pro with Rycote Lyre Shockmount from Rode is a supercardioid condenser shotgun microphone that terminates in a 1/8" stereo mini-jack (dual mono), includes an integrated shockmount, and an integrated foam windscreen. It can be used to capture audio for camcorders, DSLR, and portable recorders as a source of primary and reference audio.

The VideoMic Pro has been upgraded from earlier models with a 1/2" condenser capsule that provides broadcast-quality audio. Its 1/8" stereo mini-jack connector (outputting the mono signal to both left and right channels) delivers low self-noise of just 14 dB. A supercardioid polar pattern ensures that surrounding audio is minimized, and your recording is focused on the subject in front of the camera.

In addition, the Rycote Lyre-based shockmount is built from a single piece of hard-wearing thermoplastic. It separates the VideoMic Pro capsule and electronics from its mount, providing isolation from external physical factors that may cause unwanted rumble and vibrations in the microphone. This suspension will never wear out, sag or snap.

Easily accessible on the rear face of the microphone are the power, the filter, the level controls and a selectable high-pass filter at 80 Hz. The filter will prevent low-end noise such as air conditioners and traffic from being recorded. Furthermore, the -10 dB (or pad) is suitable when recording loud sound sources such as live music, motorsports, or interviews, where the subject is very close to the camera. There is a +20 dB level boost designed for use with DSLR cameras, so the user can reduce the camera's preamp level, effectively reducing the amount of noise generated by the camera's audio circuitry.

The Rode VideoMic Pro uses a standard sized shoe-mount for on-camera use and features a 3/8" thread in the base of the mount for easy boom-pole mounting. The VideoMic Pro is battery powered and provides over 70-hours recording from a single 9V battery.

    Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not improve sound on my 5D MK2. iPod touch is better! I'm a fan of Rde and have a few of their mics but I guess I'm alone in my feelings about this VideoMic Pro. I needed something to improve the sound entering my Canon 5D Mark II. I decided on the Rde video mic, which gets good reviews. I ran a bunch of tests, using every configuration on the Mic and I just wasn't impressed - I even had a digital specialist eq it in Adobe Premiere and still I was disappointed. When I did the tests I also recorded sound with an iPod touch. The sound from the iPod touch was amazing compared to the Rde! The Rde sound was hollow, tinny and hissy. This mic doesn't cut it for the price. I'm returning and continuing my search.

    Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good performance but questionable build quality I bought this mic to replace my original VideoMic Pro that was getting beat up as the result of years work. The new mic works just as good as the original. To my knowledge, RODE is the only manufacturer who offers decent mics with +20 dB gain booster. This is a crucial feature to keep the camera's noisy preamp out of the picture. I wish other manufacturers offered this feature so that we will have more to choose from. On the other hand, I was disappointed that RODE had not addressed the problems that many users of the original griped about: the battery compartment door and the barrel construction. The battery door is so hard to operate. It's just a poor design. The barrel is so flimsy that it looks it will break very easily. Anyone who sees the mic with the windscreen removed will agree with this notion. I give this new mic 4 stars for the performance and 2 stars for the build quality.

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from A must for nats and scratch tracks Though on-camera is typically a terrible place for a mic, the application has its place. If you're shooting on DSLR, Canon Cinema, or even a small camcorder, this is a must-have for nats recording, and for clear scratch audio to sync with dual-system audio. Rycote's lyre design is one of the best isolation mounts available. R?DE's mic design offers a gain boost for use with weaker in-camera preamps, helping to minimize the noise floor. The mic itself has a good sound quality. While it isn't flat or uncolored, it's well above average and provides quality, usable nats for b-roll. I keep this mic atop my EOS-80D at all times.

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good quality sound, LOTS of ambient noise and hiss I tried everything to reduce ambient noise and hiss (+20db, disabling on-camera AGC... etc) but this mic just captures everything. I was using the Rode SmartLav+ before and was expecting better sound with this. I have a 28mm lens so I'm very close to the camera and talking loudly the mic captures MORE ambient noise than the SmartLav+ connected to my iPhone. So it is just convenient and good enough when the conditions are there, but for more heavy duty I use the lavalier mic and it is WAY better. P.S. I don't use sound recorders or anything similar, although I know it could help, imagine a vlogger using that (instead of just having a lapel mic under the shirt connected to an iPhone in inside a jean's pocket, or the VideoMic Pro mounted on the camera).

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Sound Capture This is my second Rode mic. I was extremely please with my Rode shotgun mic, but the shockproof mount (old style) kept breaking the rubber suspension mounts. The VideoMic Pro is almost half the size of my shotgun mic, but still seems to capture voice and other sounds from a distance and makes them feel close up in the final productions. I generally produce instructional videos and the new mic has performed well. I will be recording a live music performance in 3 weeks and will see how well it handle that venue. I also own a Rode stereo mic, but the sound from the shotgun mic has gotten me many compliments. After all, 80% of a video is the audio.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Directional, Robust, and Compact I make short films and often use an interview setup with the mic boomed from a stand. I have to admit, this microphone is a worthy investment and does not disappoint. It is directional and is just a pleasure to use with the Zoom H1. The switches are intuitive and the design is clean. The shockmount is quite good. Some operator noise can be heard if the boom pole is moved vigorously, but I doubt that will happen often if at all during field recording. This mic, coupled with the extension cable and the Zoom H1 are a very solid beginner's starter kit. If purchased during a sale, the whole set can be purchased in under $$.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this over and over I've always been a fan of Rode. I've used their mics for years in the industry and they put out amazing audio. I use this on my Sony A7sII for ambient noise in any situation and it works wonderfully. There's little to no static interference which is a huge plus and saves time in post. The best thing about this mic is how small it is! You can shoot your video and the mic doesn't get in your way, unlike those clunky shotgun mics that you pay so much money for. It's lite and serves it's purpose of being an amazing and affordable mic. If you're going back and forth on mics, GET THIS ONE. It truly is next level.

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from Microphone was not perfect but it met the need Had an outdoor event in a fairly quiet park, shooting video from about 10 feet away. Had set the audio on the neutral setting and found it to be way to quiet (could hardly hear any sound at all). Turned up the setting to higher setting and it definitely grabbed the voices of the subjects in the video, but also really grabbed the sounds from over two hundred feet away. I am a complete novice at the video thing so operator error was not out of the question. A little pricey but got the job done.
