RODE VideoMic Pro Overview

Providing the flexibility to accommodate camera-mount or boompole microphone operation for mobile journalists, vloggers, and run-and-gun videographers who need a versatile indoor/outdoor shotgun mic setup that works with any camcorder or HDSLR camera, this B&H Kit features the Rode VideoMic Pro battery-powered shotgun microphone with a 3-stage gain control and bass roll-off, the Rode Micro Boompole telescoping boompole, an Auray custom furry windshield, and a 10' 3.5mm TRS extension cable.

RODE VideoMic Pro Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone

Offering lower noise, higher sensitivity, and more adjustable settings than the VideoMic, the Rode VideoMic Pro camera-mount shotgun microphone is ideal for mobile journalists, vloggers, budget filmmakers, and run-and-gun shooters looking for a cost-effective way to step up to the next level in quality.

A single 9V battery provides up to 70 hours of run time and an LED turns red to indicate low-battery status. Adjustable gain and a selectable bass roll-off make it easy to optimize the level and tone of your recording for a range of scenarios.

This compact and lightweight shotgun microphone features an integrated shockmount that mounts directly to your camera or boompole and reduces noise from various vibrations. The windscreen design reduces wind noise, making it well suited for outdoor shoots. The attached 3.5mm TRS cable ensures easy hookup to your camera, and the dual-mono output means that no channel selection is necessary on your recording device.

Shotgun Mic with Directional Sound Pickup
Whereas most built-in camera microphones pick up sound from all directions, this microphone utilizes a supercardioid polar pattern to focus on sound in front of it while attenuating sound from the sides and rear. Its low-noise electronics and sensitive condenser element deliver more detailed audio than the mics typically found in cameras and portable recorders.
Easy Hookup to Camera
A straight 3.5mm cable is permanently attached to the mic for fast hookup to your camera. The cable's 3.5mm TRS plug is wired in a dual-mono configuration, ensuring that the mic signal is sent identically to both input channels of your camera or portable recorder.
Long Battery Life
Pop a 9V battery in the VideoMic Pro for up to 70 hours of operating time. The dedicated power LED changes from green to red when the battery should be replaced. The VideoMic Pro can still function for approximately 10 hours once the power indicator turns red, but performance will be compromised. Use the power switch to conserve battery life during periods of inactivity.
Bass Roll-Off
The high-pass filter can be set to flat or 80 Hz to roll off low-frequency noise from common sources such as air conditioners and traffic.
3-Stage Gain Control
To enable optimal recording levels, the VideoMic Pro boasts a 3-stage gain control. Like the low roll-off and high-frequency boost, the gain control is digitally switched for precision and convenience. The +20 dB setting is ideal when recording to cameras, as it boosts the signal without requiring extreme gain on the camera's inferior preamp. Select the flat setting when routing the mic into a dedicated high-quality preamp, or switch to the -10 dB option when loud sound sources threaten to distort your recording.
Integrated Shockmount Inhibits Vibrations
Understanding that the rubber bands used in many shockmounts can snap and stretch, Rode chose to integrate a rugged Rycote Lyre suspension-style shockmount. This simplifies setup of the mic and inhibits the transfer of vibrations from the camera. Plus, the bottom of the shockmount features a camera shoe mount with a 3/8" thread, ensuring easy attachment to your camera or a boompole such as Rode's Micro Boompole (available separately).
Windscreen Minimizes Wind Noise
The VideoMic Pro has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of wind noise in outdoor environments, consider a furry windshield such as the Rode DeadCat VMPR (available separately).
Connectivity Options
Expand the microphone's device compatibility with Rode accessories such as the SC4 and VXLR (both available separately). The SC4 is a short cable that lets you connect the VideoMic Pro directly to a smartphone or tablet equipped with a 3.5mm TRRS jack. The VXLR adapter is the ideal solution when you want to record the VideoMic Pro to a camcorder or mixer that has XLR inputs.

RODE VC1 3.5mm TRS Microphone Extension Cable for Cameras (10')

The Rode VC1 is a high-quality microphone extension cable that offers 10' of additional length between your mic's 3.5mm TRS connector and the 3.5mm audio input of your DSLR/mirrorless camera or recorder.

The VC1 is compatible with microphones from Rode, as well as other manufacturers. It can also be used as a headphone extension cable.

The cable is equipped with a female 3.5mm TRS jack on one end and a male 3.5mm TRS plug on the other. It is well suited for applications that require positioning the subject further away from your camera, or mounting the microphone on a boompole or stand.

Auray Windbuster for Rode VideoMic Pro with Rycote Lyre Shockmount

The Auray WSW-Series Custom Windbusters provide dual-layered wind protection, substantially reducing unwanted broadband wind noise and vocal pops with minimal high frequency loss. The Windbuster has been custom-made for the VideoMic Pro with the Rycote Lyre Shockmount and the VideoMic Pro Plus and is designed to be used over its existing foam windscreen. The simulated fur outer layer works in tandem with the acoustic-cloth inner lining to protect the microphone element from air bursts without muffling the sound. The velvet back cover with locking drawstring offers protection to the microphone, as well as easy access to the controls.

When used on the VideoMic Pro, the Windbuster is effective in minimizing wind noise and plosive sounds. It is most effective in light-to-moderate breeze conditions (4 to 17 mph), and users can generally expect a 30 to 40 dB reduction in wind noise with modest dampening of high frequencies. For most applications, the modest high-frequency dampening is a worthwhile exchange for the substantial wind-noise reduction. In addition to dual-layered wind protection, the Windbuster helps prevent moisture and dirt from damaging your microphone.

RODE VideoMic Pro Reviews

Works with Wildlife

By Thomas
Rated 5 out of 5

Got this RODE VideoMic Pro mic on a B&H promotion. Works fabulous with my Nikon 200-500 zoom for all my wildlife videos. To change the 9 volt battery, I slide the wind protector forward which gives me more room and visibility to carefully push slightly up and outward to remove the battery holder. When installing, I line up the door tab on top under the frame press up and push in and it will come down in its place. Slide the wind protector back in its original place. Look closely at the fitment for best results. The more you do it the easier it gets. Poor design YES. but was worth the sale.

Has about everything

After you figure out where the battery goes the mic mounts well and provides excellent coverage. I used it with a Atomos Ninja 5+ to record elephants from 150-200'

question

How do you attach the mic to the boom pole? Boom pole is a screw thread and mic uses a hot shoe.
Asked by: Lindsay M.
Just turn the mic upside down so you are looking at the bottom of the shoe. You will see a hole in under side of the shoe. The threaded stud at the end of the boom pole will screw right into the shoe. They are all 3/8 threads.

Will this work with the FZ300 Panasonic ?
Asked by: Clarissa
Hello Clarissa, yes, this should work just fine together. It appears the FZ300 has an external microphone input, and the Rode VideoMic Pro has its own battery, therefore it won't need power from the camera.
