Tiffen Black Pro-Mist Filter (46mm, Grade 1/4)
Key Features
  • Controlled Highlight Flare
  • High-Quality Optical Glass
  • Black Adonized Aluminum Material
  • Lowers Contrast
The 46mm Tiffen Black Pro-Mist 1/4 Filter helps to reduce the value of the highlights while slightly lowering the overall contrast. This filter is especially useful for smoothing out and softening facial wrinkles and other blemishes. While designed for use with movies, this filter can also be used for fashion and beauty applications. Unlike a traditional diffusion or soft focus filter, Pro-Mist filters provide little loss of detail across the image. The 1/4 density provides more contrast and highlight reduction than the 1/8, but less than the 1/2, while still allowing for a soft, pastel-like quality of light.

Tiffen Black Pro-Mist Reviews

Great for some uses

The eyes stay sharp, the skin smooths out a bit in a flattering soft way and you get a bloom in the onscreen lights with bright areas, like faces, subtly glowing. Had to watch over lighting faces, but a great tool. I would consider buying the stronger ones for music video or art film shoots, but the 1/8 and 1/4 are good for getting the effect without drawing attention to it.

Misty highlights with a draw back

Have not used this enough for a super accurate review but test shots revealed an issue that might be important for some. PROS: Well constructed with solid metal ring. Definitely adds a pleasing and subtle mist around objects for a more filmic look. CONS: Rear surface reflection is not controlled well enough and one can see after images when bright lights are taken at anything but head-on. It is not a huge deal and in busy scenes this might have minimal effect, but at this price range I would have expected more interference coatings on the back side to null this effect. Note: both images were taken with a filter over the lens for fairness - the standard UV filter shows no ghosting while the Black mist does. Summary: I have used this filter long enough to understand if this is a deal breaker - just noticed it on test shots & thought I would share. Given that this is an initial review I gave it an extra star. If this effect shows up in other types of shots, then I will subtract stars depending on how onerous it is.

would a pro mist filter like this reduce the glare off subjects wearing glasses being lit by film lights? would a polarizer or variable nd be better for this purpose? (for eliminating glare in glasses)
Asked by: Kevin
This filter would accentuate the glare if anything. What you want is a polariser.
