The Tiffen 77mm Black Pro-Mist 1/4 Filter helps to reduce the value of the highlights while slightly lowering the overall contrast. This filter is especially useful for smoothing out and softening facial wrinkles and other blemishes. While designed for use with movies, this filter can also be used for fashion and beauty applications. Unlike a traditional diffusion or soft focus filter, Pro-Mist filters provide little loss of detail across the image. The 1/4 density provides more contrast and highlight reduction than the 1/8, but less than the 1/2, while still allowing for a soft, pastel-like quality of light.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Pro-Mist filters provide little loss of detail across the image compared to traditional diffusion and soft focus filters.
Especially useful for smoothing out and softening facial wrinkles and other blemishes.

    77mm Black Pro-Mist 1/4 Filter is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Subtile Image Softening The use of HD cameras often provides an unwanted about of image detail, especially in portrait type setting. Add to this the deeper depth of field from the comparatively smaller imaging chips and the picture may just look too sharp. This is where a subtile filter like the Tiffen Black Pro-Mist really comes in handy. Unlike to conventional Pro-Mist which is also available in 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and Full strengths, the Black Pro-Mist avoids the milky, lower contrast by product. Much like a black stocking on the back of the lens, blacks remain black, and only a subtle softening of detail occurs. The Black Pro-Mist is a must have addition to any HD cinematographer's bag of tricks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ideal softening effect I picked this filter, along with the necessary step-up rings to match my favorite lenses. I needed a soft, glowy feel for an independent short film. We just wrapped production, and I'm very happy with the effect. The filter lends a nice glow to everything, without being obnoxious and over-soft. Digital video is very crisp and precise...this filter adds a gentle film glow to everything, which makes it better for creating atmosphere...plus the actors like how kind it is to their skin.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Greta filter to take the edge of digital I had this filter and a 1/4 black pro mist too. Both were a bit low on quality control so I had to turn them. However Im getting replacements, at lest for the 1/8 pro mist. I found the 1/4 a bit too heavy bit 1/8th is perfect. It takes down your highlights and softens slightly, just enough to make it less digital but not enough to notice it feeling soft at all. Basically get 1/8th if you want your video to look a bit more like film, if you want your canon to look more Alexa. I use it on a C300 with Zeiss glass. I used to use them back in the day on film for music videos to soften it on singers a bit but now its just to make it less 'digital'. Also i kept keeping DPS in American Cinematographer swearing by this and 'Hollywood filters' but that this is slightly less obvious. I concur!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a good filter. The first filter I received from B&H was damaged, but B&H having a good return policy let me return it without a hassle (and they paid for the return shipping!). Now for the filter, the filter is good. I will buy the 1/2 strength because the 1/4 just doesn't knock out enough of the sharpness on skin on the c100 Mark ii; though it does give a nice bloom around the highlights. The build quality is nice and I have yet to run into a problem with it getting stuck on any of my lenses. Now I will say that when put on a sensi step down filter ring it was a struggle to get off, but that may be because I over tightened it, time will tell. Overall I'm happy with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you want to use Black Pro-Mist, this is the one. I find that the 1/4 strength BPM filter is the one that I reach for 99% of the time. It's a subtle effect but it makes a huge difference. For shooting on a 35mm on aps-c or 50mm for ff this is definitely my favorite diffusion filter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Makes your digital video look like film The Black Pro-Mist adapters will give your video a softer, more filmic look & add a nice halation to highlights. This also improves highlight rolloff and adds the appearance of more dynamic range. Just be sure to expose properly, because an overexposed shot, especially in daylight, can be ruined with one of these filters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's Perfect. Does exactly what we wanted. Makes really bright highlights glow just a bit, but the image stays very sharp!
