Nikon 500mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Optimized for fast shooting speeds and working in difficult conditions, the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR is an impressive telephoto designed for Nikon FX-format DSLRs. The sophisticated optical design incorporates two fluorite and three extra-low dispersion elements to control chromatic aberrations and distortions, as well as lessen the overall weight of the lens. Also contributing to improved image quality, both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to lessen flare and ghosting for improved contrast, clarity, and color fidelity. Protecting the advanced optical design is a front fluorine-coated meniscus glass element that, when paired with the weather-resistant magnesium alloy barrel, supports working in inclement conditions.

A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 750mm equivalent focal length.
Two fluorite and three ED lens elements work to reduce chromatic aberrations; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for up to four shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens' use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions and a Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system.
Silent Wave Motor autofocus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance that is ideal for photographing fast-moving subjects.
Full-time manual focus override allows instant switching between AF and MF focusing systems by just rotating the focus ring at any time.
Internal focusing design maintains the overall lens length during operation and contributes to a lighter overall weight, as well as a minimum focusing distance of 11.9'.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Fluorine-coated front meniscus glass element affords protection to the optical system.
Dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium alloy lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
A removable monopod collar is included with the lens for well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod. The collar ring also incorporates ball bearings for smooth transitions between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.

    Nikon 500mm f/4.0 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR Lens is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for wildlife photography I live in the country so much of my photography involves wildlife. I have tried many options but they were always a compromise. I am currently using this on a D750. The focusing is fast and tracking birds in flight is excellent. Image quality is fantastic. I tried many of the telephoto zooms and the 300 f/4E PF. I also have the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO Lens with a teleconverter. Using those combinations work only if the lighting is very good. I tried the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens which wasn't long enough unless using a teleconverter. I prefer the balance of this lens to the 400 2.8. I would highly recommend this lens. It is a joy to shoot. I would also recommend reading John Sherman's review on Photography Life as it is quite extensive and has many great photos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Big Glass and Hand Hold-able Excellent sharpness, contrast, and colors. Which is to be expected from a lens of this caliber. What was not expected is the weight and balance. I'd read that it is very hand hold-able for a 500 prime, but you can't appreciate how good it really is until you pick it up and point it. The balance is excellent. It feels only slightly heavier than my 200-500. I hand-hold 99% of my shots so I am extremely pleased with this lens. When it comes to big primes and the cost required to own one, the question is always asked do you ever regret dropping that much cash on a lens? I never read a yes response to that question. And now I'll add my resounding NO !!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ultra Sharp Telephoto Prime First my thanks to B&H for great customer service. I received an email that the lens was back in stock, ordered it 5 minutes later and it was on my doorstep the next morning. As for the lens itself, it is a phenomenal achievement by Nikon. I know it's kind of the tweener lens between the Nikon 400mm f2.8 and the 600mm FL f4, but I love the size and weight. It is easier to manage than either the 400 or 600mm. I used this lens and a pro football game on a D4S with an RRS monopod. The results were spectacular. Standing at the end zone and shooting to the opposite 20 yard line, I was still extracting fine detail in the quarterback's eyes. Very impressed with the sharpness, fast AF and overall IQ. VR also works as expected. This lens is soon to be on the list of Iconic Nikon glass.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight and sharp I have used a 600mm on a tripod and a 200-400 zoom for handheld - both for birding. My 200-400 was good for close subjects in woodsy terrain. The 600mm excels in more open areas. Some nature areas are a mix of shooting venues. The 500mm seems to do well in both environments. It is lighter than my 200-400m and has good reach with a 1.4TC. I may find myself using the 500mm more often than not. I can walk farther with the 500mm than I can carrying the tripod. Very happy so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Continues to amaze me I primarily use this wonderfully sharp lens with the D500, and more often than not I have the TC-14E III attached. I also use it with the D750 and D810A. Owned it for 17 months and continue to be amazed by its performance for nature and wildlife photography. I'm 51 years old, yet the lens is light enough that I can walk around and carry it on a strap w/ D500 and TC-14E III for a few hours. For longer hikes, I use a monopod or a ThinkTank backpack. Superb contrast, resolution, sharpness, and vivid colors are simply amazing. What's not to like? Well yeah...the price is steep. One of the photos I am providing with this review were shot with the TC-14E III. You'll notice how that combination produces sharp results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For handheld, This is it!! I sold my 500mm.G model to get this, I'm so glad I did!!. I shoot about 98% handheld...very little tripod use. The lighter weight up front makes a substantial difference. I also believe the VR is improved, works well. I'm getting more keepers, so to me it's well worth it. If you shoot handheld and thinking about it, just do it, I Love this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow Got one of the first of these delivered I think. My previous go-to lens for birds and wildlife is the Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VR II. The 500FL is longer, but about the same weight and I find the two lenses are about equally transportable and easy to carry and shoot unassisted by a tripod or monopod. I regularly head out for multi-mile, multi-hour hikes with the 500FL. I added an Acra-swiss plate to the lens tripod foot, and use a RRS clamp with an over-the-shoulder Rapid Strap RS-7. The lens balances nicely facing to the rear as I walk.Like the 300 f/2.8 the lens is crazy sharp. Different than (my copy at least of) the 300 f/2.8 the 500FL is good at distances >100m.The VR works amazingly well.Don't know what else to say. Here are a few images I've taken since I got the lens a few weeks ago.below is a hummingbird shot handheld at 1/160s. Coyotes shot at about 400m, handheld. Kestrel in flight handheld. My dog shot handheld is the last image from about 30m.------------------------------

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp, Fast AF, light and Handholdable I use this basically for wildlife photography: 1. It's very sharp even at wide open 2. AF faster than the new 200-500mm f/5.6 which is also an excellent lens but I've found that it's kind of slow for BIF. 3. It's light enough that I can handhold it for BIF shots.
