Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR Overview

Optimized for fast shooting speeds and working in difficult conditions, the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR is an impressive telephoto designed for Nikon FX-format DSLRs. The sophisticated optical design incorporates two fluorite and three extra-low dispersion elements to control chromatic aberrations and distortions, as well as lessen the overall weight of the lens. Also contributing to improved image quality, both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to lessen flare and ghosting for improved contrast, clarity, and color fidelity. Protecting the advanced optical design is a front fluorine-coated meniscus glass element that, when paired with the weather-resistant magnesium-alloy barrel, supports working in inclement conditions.

A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Super telephoto designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 750mm equivalent focal length.
Two fluorite and three extra-low dispersion lens elements work to reduce chromatic aberrations; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens's use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions and a Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Fluorine-coated front meniscus glass element affords protection to the optical system.
Dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium-alloy lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
A removable tripod collar is included with the lens for well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod. The collar ring also incorporates ball bearings for smooth transitions between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.
Compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR Reviews

Excellent Lens for Wildlife Photography!

I love this lens! It's excellent for wildlife photography and it certainly doesn't disappoint. I had been using my Nikkor 80-400 and decided to upgrade to this 500 f4 for my D850. I used it extensively while on my first safari in Tanzania, where it never let me down. It was a bit heavy to hand hold for long periods, but that seems to be stating the obvious. It was still manageable though. The color is accurate and the focus is very fast. The VR is so smooth that I thought it wasn't working when I first got it because it didn't make any small chatter or obvious movement like my Nikkor 80-400 did. I'm very happy with it's performance. B&H delivered it well packaged the day after ordering.

An outstanding lightweight lens

This is a wonderful addition for me. It weighs only a few more ounces than the f2.8 300mm lens, and gives me more of the reach I want - to see those tack sharp eyes on birds. It is a huge expense, however, and of course that is the fact of life downside. But - if you can swing this - you should be very happy!

I agonized over the decision to spend $10k on a lens and with a shaky index finger, pressed the order button. Have the Nikkor 200-500mm VR and the Tamron 150-600mm G2, but sometimes struggled with focus hunting on both. The 500mm f/4 E FL ED is so quick and tack sharp that I have doubled my keeper shots and the clarity and overall IQ is superior, especially when married to my D850. Yes, I gave up on my usual 3 to 4 Vegas trips ($8000 total per year) this year and returned my Tamron in time to recoup another $1300, so this lens only cost $700 (in my mind). This lens will hold it's value for many years to come as it basically sells for the same $10k it did when introduced 4 plus years ago. For me, this is the pinnacle of super primes other than the 600mm which I cannot handhold. Speaking of weight at only a tad over 6 pounds, this lens is so well balanced that I feel no more weight than my super zooms (200-500mm). Was a must have for wildlife and Birds-in-Flight and have no regrets. I now look forward to shooting every chance at the lagoon or beach and did not want to wait months later or settling for lesser quality. If you can make it happen, I highly recommend this top shelf lens to complete your arsenal.

I had hesitated for quite some time toward spending big bucks on this lens and was determined that if it did not live up to my high expectations in every way it was going right back. Fortunately, I am quite delighted with it. Its images are crisp and clean and it focuses in an instant.  This lens is going to get a LOT of use from me!

Better than the Nikon 500mm f4.0g vr lens

I have had this lens by several months. The balance of this lens without the heavy front glass as on the Nikon 500mm f4.0g vr lens and lighter weight is amazing. My old Nikon 500mm f4.0g vr lens required large auto focus fine tune values with my d810 and also with my tc 1.4EIII converter. The new Nikon 500mm f4.0e lens requires no auto focus fine tune using the lens or even when using the tc 1.4EIII converter. The optical glass in this lens is sharp, sharp, sharp and has a lightning fast auto focus even when in full auto focus mode. The lens collar has ball bearings so the movement of the collar is easy and smooth when I want to go portrait instead of landscape framing. One thing I don't get is why doesn't this lens come with a grooved lens foot so that quick change tripod heads can be used with this lens without changing the foot that comes with the lens. I use the lens in wide open aperture a lot because of our cloudy and dark weather most the year and the images do not suffer with excellent sharpness. I bought this lens from B & H used in their "open box" condition with full warranty and saved over $1,000 so was fortunate with seeing it in their inventory and bought it as quite as I could push the order button. I am happy as a clam, however happy they are.

I really thought long and hard because this lens was so expensive but after the first day I wasn’t kicking myself for not buying it sooner. The focus the color rendering abs the contrast on this lens is outstanding plus with the new lighter weight much easier to handle. So don’t wait but it if you find it in stock buy it now

Power Consumption? Just mounted this to a Z7 which was previously used with a 200-500 F5.6 Nikkor. The power consumption with it seems very high compared to the zoom. Has anyone experienced this? Thanks
