Azden SGM-250P Reviews

Brilliant and well made microphone for the money.

The kind of sound quality and build for the money is a great value. This microphone captures clean audio in most conditions and I've found it to be a lovely pair with my BMPCC 4K as a source of interview and short narrative film audio.

Love it.

I conduct indoor interviews and this mic is perfect. I was concerned about not spending the big money on other mics but so far this is great. Very clean sound.

Wonderful 200 dollar mic.

Phantom only, 20 bucks cheaper than the model w AA battery option, and I like it that way. Less money, less that can go wrong and less I have to worry about. I'm never without phantom power on my XLR options, so I like that I'm not thinking Did I bring batteries? Is the battery good? Did I install the battery? Is the battery STILL good? Did I remove the battery? Quality sound, very respectable noise floor, sturdy metal construction, low profile and weighs practically nothing. Indistinguishable from my old Rode NTG2, even the same 10 year warranty. And the old deadcat from my Rode fits it perfectly, too. God bless ya, Rode. Still use your products, but for those at a 200 or so dollar budget, save 60 and grab this over the NTG2. *One note - without the battery housing, this mic is shorter so works best with the short 2&1/2 shockmount.

Great Mic - Only Phantom Powered

This a great mic overall that I am using for audio capture for shorts/low budget filmmaking. The mic has a decent range for the price. If you are little to get a bit more dynamic sound - check out the Rode NTG-3. The mic also includes a camera mountable shock mount and foam windscreen which is nice. You must power this mic via 48V phantom power which can be frustrating if you are working with a field recorder that doesn't support it or your field recorder eats batteries like it's thanksgiving when using phantom power. I would (and did) go with the SGM-250 (non P) model because it is the same price but gives you more flexibility.

question

will the 250p work with xlr to mini on GH5s if you select phantom mode on camera...and does it reduce battery life noticeably?
Asked by: Martin
There is no way to send phantom power from a camera's mini-jack mic input, since it is an unbalanced connection. So the SGM-250P will not work if converted to mini-plug on any camera. For this you will need a microphone that is self-powered. Our SGM-250 model shotgun microphone can run off a AA battery and could be adapted to a mini input if desired. However, for better results, we'd recommend the SMX-15 microphone for unbalanced, mini-jack connections. The SMX-15 also has a built in gain booster circuit to help over come the noise that is usually inherent in the poorer quality mic preamps that are built into most mirrorless and DSLR cameras.
