Azden SGM-250P Reviews

A great on-camera XLR mic.

I use this mic as a mounted XLR mic for backup audio on my BMPCC4K or Red Scarlet Dragon. It includes a fantastic shock mount that attaches to any cold shoe.

Wonderful 200 dollar mic.

Phantom only, 20 bucks cheaper than the model w AA battery option, and I like it that way. Less money, less that can go wrong and less I have to worry about. I'm never without phantom power on my XLR options, so I like that I'm not thinking Did I bring batteries? Is the battery good? Did I install the battery? Is the battery STILL good? Did I remove the battery? Quality sound, very respectable noise floor, sturdy metal construction, low profile and weighs practically nothing. Indistinguishable from my old Rode NTG2, even the same 10 year warranty. And the old deadcat from my Rode fits it perfectly, too. God bless ya, Rode. Still use your products, but for those at a 200 or so dollar budget, save 60 and grab this over the NTG2. *One note - without the battery housing, this mic is shorter so works best with the short 2&1/2 shockmount.

question

will the 250p work with xlr to mini on GH5s if you select phantom mode on camera...and does it reduce battery life noticeably?
Asked by: Martin
There is no way to send phantom power from a camera's mini-jack mic input, since it is an unbalanced connection. So the SGM-250P will not work if converted to mini-plug on any camera. For this you will need a microphone that is self-powered. Our SGM-250 model shotgun microphone can run off a AA battery and could be adapted to a mini input if desired. However, for better results, we'd recommend the SMX-15 microphone for unbalanced, mini-jack connections. The SMX-15 also has a built in gain booster circuit to help over come the noise that is usually inherent in the poorer quality mic preamps that are built into most mirrorless and DSLR cameras.
