LensCoat Pro Jr Reviews

Works well for stabilizing long zoom

Got this primarily for shooting out my window on wildlife drives at national wildlife refuges and on safari. Worked well. I was able to keep my camera positioned without the 150-600 mm zoom lens moving in the wind. The Jr size took about 1.75 lbs of buckwheat hulls. I tried a ball head with the plate and it seems to work, but I did not field test that.

Does the job

I had been toying around for purchasing this for over a year. Finally, decided to do it. I'm glad I did it. It does the job. I'm using it over the driver's side door. The only hindrance is that is that you can't switch the way it sits. Other than that works fine.

Good solution for shooting from a car

The LensSack Pro Jr Beanbag solves all kinds of problems for me. Raising the window to get the camera to a comfortable level works well. I get sharp shots at max range without a gimbal or ball head. It's easy to handle at just 4 pounds, with Ziploc bags of birdseed. I stay safe, warm, dry and get much closer to wildlife than when I get out of the car. The junior model is a good match for my mirrorless rig.

Very nice but not perfect

I purchased this for car use while shooting out the window. With the glass all the way down it sits comfortably on the sill with little to no slippage due to weight and good inside rubber surface. It’s a perfect dead weight that gives stable vibration free shooting. If using a ball head the height ends up just about right at eye level but everyone is different with so many variations due to vehicle, ball head size and lens.  But I did purchase a Kirk Window Mount Spacer that basically raises the head 2” higher on a large cylinder. This was useful to me, as I often like to use a Novoflex Forked “V” shape head to just rest the lens on and quickly pan and tilt. The spacer just gives me that extra height needed since the fork isn’t as high as a ball head is. Overall it’s a great design with nice features like pocket, webbing and handles, but there is a flaw for me. If I could make a design change, I’d have three separate chambers inside or inside webbing that prevents excess bulging in the middle. I filled mine with high-density polyethylene plastic beads. I didn’t want anything organic that could hold moisture or rot. As a side note the fill zipper made me nervous and I ended up crazy gluing it just so I never have an accidental spill of tiny beads everywhere. It took about 7 lbs of plastic beads. But my problem was the two sides bulge out and the top surface ended up with almost no beads below the ball head. I had to pack more beads in which bulges the sides even more. I tried several small freezer bags inside but it just didn’t distribute well or feel right. It would be perfect if the top area had a separate chamber, which could hold the right amount of beads for ball head support, and then the sides could be comfortably filled without too much bulging. Maybe a cheaper option might be some inside web stitching that prevented excess bulge through the middle area. What I end up doing is a upside down shake and massage to get more beads in top area and less side bulge and then quickly try to flip onto the door sill. I would prefer a better design with chambers or webbing even if it cost more money. Take a look at the product image with camera just resting on the top of bag. You will see the inside is bulging so much it’s touching with no gap and there is no space to fit over a door sill or something else. I see it now only because I understand the problem.

I am using this beanbag as a support for my camera with a Lightning trigger to capture lightning strikes from the relative comfort of my car. I used buckwheat hulls to fill it, so it remains relatively light in weight and conforms well to the door of my car. Of course, I have a ball head with QR mount on top - the provided metal plate works well as a base for the head. The grippy surface of the underside gives the bag a sturdy purchase on the door so movement is not an issue. My other planned use is at a bird sanctuary (such as Bosque del Apache Wildlife Sanctuary) where I will be using long telephotos, but current circumstances (like Covid shutdowns) don't permit this as yet.

The perfect alternative when you don't have your tripod or cannot use one. You just fill it with buckwheat hulls or rice and you're good to go.

Used this on a recent safari. Found an airplane neck-rest pillow made with foam beads (weight @ 3 oz) that fit perfectly as the bean bag stuffing. this provided a solid support, was easy to move (comfortable for an armrest in the vehicle- and best of all - did not add weight to my suitcase or have me trying to find stuffing once I arrive on site.

question

does this bag good enough to support 400-600mm tele lenses ?
Asked by: Anonymous
I bought mine for a sigma 150-500 and I found it a little on the low side resting on my car window sill with my gimbal so I would suggest for you to measure the height that would be comfortable and maybe look the pro specifications Which ever you choose you'll find it handy when slowly driving a country side road and very useful for quick shot resting on your vehicle

question

Would this bag be oK to use with a Sigma 500 f4.5 lens?
Asked by: Anonymous
I bought it to use with my Sigma 150-600 and it works great! I've used it to support lenses on the hood of my car and by slipping it over the door to shoot bald eagles using the car as a blind. I have the metal plate but have not used it yet as I just don't seem to need it. Maybe use it this spring to shoot bears in Yellowstone as it will be easier to swivel the lens. I filled mine with packing peanuts to keep it light weight for carrying along with other camera gear.
