RODE NTG4+ Shotgun Microphone

Customize your tone and capture quality sound indoors or outside for your next indie film, TV shoot, or documentary project with the Rode NTG4+ battery- or phantom-powered shotgun microphone. Specialized features such as low-noise circuitry, digitally switchable pad and frequency settings, and minimal handling noise reduce the need to repair and restore audio in post production.

The elevated sensitivity of the NTG4+ allows it to produce strong output levels without having to apply extreme gain at your mic preamp. Sonically, the NTG4+ delivers warm sound due in part to its gentle dip in high frequencies and its rumble-reducing selectable low-cut filter. A switchable treble boost is on hand for situations where additional clarity is needed.

Quality Sound Capture
The combination of the 10.9" long body and supercardioid polar pattern yields focused front-facing directionality and enhanced attenuation of sound entering from the sides. Its low self-noise of 16 dBA and sensitive condenser element communicate detailed audio unburdened by the hiss that plagues many low-cost microphones. Plus, its balanced output allows longer cable runs than most camera-mount shotgun microphones.
Internal Battery or Phantom Powered
Operate the NTG4+ on 48V phantom power or via its internal rechargeable lithium battery, which provides up to 150 hours of run time. The micro-USB port and supplied USB cable enable easy recharging in just two hours—charge the NTG4+ via a computer, power brick, or vehicle. Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output, the NTG4+ is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixer adapters as well as built-in preamps on many camcorders and cinema cameras.
Customizable Tone via Digital Switching
Digital switching not only allows for intuitive access to the mic's settings, but it also retains their states when the mic is switched off. Activate the 75 Hz low-cut filter to reduce low-frequency noise from common sources such as air conditioners and traffic. Use the +6 dB treble boost for enhanced clarity and intelligibility (best for environments with minimal high-frequency ambient noise). When loud sound sources threaten to distort your recording, switch on the -10 dB pad to attenuate the input level.
Ideal for Boompole Mounting
The lightweight, metal-bodied NTG4+ includes a mic clip for easy placement on a mic stand or boompole. Alternatively, mount the NTG4+ in the Rode SM4-R shockmount or Rode PG2-R pistol grip (both available separately) to impede the transfer of vibrations in boompole or handheld applications.
Windscreen Minimizes Wind Noise
The NTG4+ has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of handling noise and wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, consider the Rode Blimp furry windshield and shockmount suspension system (available separately).

Auray Professional Windshield for Shotgun Microphones (5.5")

The Auray WSS Series Professional Windshield delivers superior 360° wind protection with acoustic transparency. They are engineered for dramatic reduction of unwanted broadband wind noise and vocal pops with very little high frequency loss, for exceptionally accurate recordings.

This WSS-2014 Professional Windshield has an inside depth of 5.5" and is designed for use with many shotgun microphones. It features a specially manufactured open-cell foam matrix surrounded by a layer of 25mm thick simulated rabbit fur. This diffusion technology lowers wind velocity in a controlled air space around the microphone, thereby reducing wind noise without muffling the sound. It also features an airtight tapered rubber base that seals out wind from the rear of the microphone, greatly improving isolation and rear wind protection.

When used on a shotgun microphone, this slip-on windshield is effective in minimizing wind noise and plosive sounds. It is most effective in light breeze to strong breeze conditions (4 to 25 mph) and users can generally expect a 24 to 40 dB reduction in wind noise with negligible dampening of high frequencies. For most applications, the negligible high-frequency dampening is a worthwhile exchange for the dramatic wind noise reduction.

In addition to superior 360° wind protection, the WSS-2014 helps prevent moisture and dirt from damaging your microphone. The windscreen is designed to fit microphones from Audio-Technica, Neumann, Røde, Sanken, Sennheiser and others.

The WSS-2014 Professional Windshield for Shotgun Microphones is an advanced solution for outstanding wind protection with acoustic transparency.

RODE NTG4+ Reviews

Excellent for Clean Dialogue and Good for Noise canceling.

The RODE NTG4+ is an excellent shotgun microphone with a lot to love, but it does come with some tonal quirks worth noting. Out of the box, without any EQ or adjustments, it tends to have a slightly brighter, high-pitched pickup rather than a completely flat or well-balanced sound. In my opinion, this makes it a fantastic mic for people with deeper voices, since that natural brightness helps bring out clarity and presence. On the other hand, if you already have a higher-pitched voice, the sound can lean a bit too sharp unless you apply EQ correction in post. That said, the overall sound quality is still crisp and focused, with great off-axis rejection and a very clean signal. The built-in rechargeable lithium battery (up to 150 hours per charge) is incredibly convenient, and the onboard controls (pad, high-pass filter, and high-frequency boost) add a lot of flexibility in the field. It’s lightweight, well-built, and works equally well on a boom pole or mounted on a camera. For the price, the NTG4+ delivers professional performance and is especially strong for filmmaking, interviews, and documentary work. Just keep in mind its natural tonal bias—it shines with deeper voices but may need some EQ love for brighter ones. However, it still does a great job overall and includes a handy built-in de-noiser. It’s a fantastic boom/shotgun mic for filmmakers on a budget. I’ve given it a 4-star rating because I believe the NTG2 and NTG3 edge it out in sound quality, though in truth, it feels more like a solid 4.5-star mic.

question

I have a Rode Videopro shotgun mic. Besides the XLR inputs, How does this compare to that microphone?
Asked by: Brian
The reach and rejection of the NTG 4+, along with a richer, fuller audio reproduction are just a few advantages. The NTG4+is also mor robustly built and includes an Internal Rechargeable Lithium Battery.

I am looking to use this with a Saramonic ...

I am looking to use this with a Saramonic SmartRig with a TRRS to TRS adapter to avoid buying the Sony XLR-K2M. Will it work?
Asked by: Anthony
The RODE NTG4+ Shotgun Microphone is compatible for use with the Saramonic SmartRig+ 2-Channel XLR Microphone Audio Mixer with the 3.5mm TRRS connector. It may also be compatible for connection to the 3.5mm TRS mic input on your DSLR or mirrorless camera. If you are only going to use the NTG4+ mic with your camera, you can connect the mic directly to the camera's 3.5mm mic input. Power the mic with its internal battery and use a cable with XLR female and 3.5mm TRS male connectors like the Kopul XRSM 3-Pin XLR Female to 3.5mm RA Stereo Mini-Plug Cable - 1.5' (B&H # KOXRSM015B), which is a good length for mounting on the camera, or use a longer length if you want to use the mic off-camera, on a boompole or stand.

question

Will this microphone work via AA battery and +48 if the internal battery has already died?
Asked by: kawame d.
There is no way to insert a AA battery. Power requirements in the data sheet for the NTG4+ indicate it can be powered using either 48V Phantom Power (4.8mA current draw) or the internal rechargeable lithium battery.

would this mic work with SKP 100 G4 Plug-on transmitter for dynamic microphones.
Asked by: peermohd
Yes, you can use the Sennheiser SKP 100 G4 transmitter with a Rode NTG4+ shotgun mic as long as you are using battery power for the mic. The SKP 100 does not supply phantom power.

question

Hi, 3 questions:-Can the built-in battery be replaced?-How long is its estimated life?-What's the best way to store (ESPECIALLY considering the internal battery) when not using it for long periods of time?Thank you very much!
Asked by: ALICIA
Rode's website advertises 150 hours of runtime from a 2 hour charge. I've never actually tested this but I have left the mic on for days at a time and it's just keeping running.

question

Considering this microphone has an internal battery, it doesn't seem like it would need +48v phantom power. Therefore, would it work with the Sony XLR-K2M XLR Adapter Kit?
Asked by: Curren
The NTG4 is able to be powered via internal battery or externally via phantom power from the source. This mic can be used with the Sony XLR-K2M in either manner.
