Rode NTG4+ overview

  • 1Description

The Rode NTG4+ Shotgun Microphone with Digital Switches and Built-In Rechargeable Battery is designed for ENG, filmmaking, field recording, sound design, and broadcast applications. The microphone builds upon the success of the company's NTG1 and NTG2 microphones with an updated capsule to deliver broadcast quality sound and digital switching options for versatile field operation.

Designed to be mounted on a boom, a handheld pistol grip, or atop a compact camera for run and gun style filmmaking, the microphone features a super-cardioid directional pickup pattern, a frequency range of 20 to 20,000 Hz, a sensitivity of -32 dB re 1 V/Pa, a dynamic range of 119 dB, a signal to noise-ratio of 78 dB SPL, and a maximum SPL of 135 dB from 48V phantom power (4.8 mA current draw) or the internal rechargeable lithium battery.

Along the body of the microphone is a power button with LED indicator as well as three digital switching buttons with LED indicators.

The first button provides a -10 dB pad on the input of the microphone to allow the recording of loud sounds without clipping.

The middle button turns on a 75 Hz high pass filter which is useful for reducing low frequency and infrasonic rumble from HVAC systems indoors or street traffic outdoors from over-powering the recording.

The third button is a high frequency boost. The value of the high frequency boost is in restoring some of the high frequency content that is often lost when a blimp or furry windshield is placed over the microphone. An added benefit is that the high frequency boost switch can help improve the intelligibility of recorded speech, especially useful for filmmaking and broadcast applications.

The NTG4+ includes a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The battery supplies the microphone with 150 hours of phantom power, which makes the NTG4+ especially desirable for run and gun mounting atop a DSLR or mirrorless camera system that would otherwise be unable to directly provide phantom power to the microphone. It takes approximately two hours to recharge the battery to full capacity using a standard Micro USB cable connected to a portable USB power pack or a USB wall adapter that are commonly used for charging most smartphones.

The microphone comes with an RM5 microphone clip, a foam windshield and a carrying pouch. The microphone also comes with a Micro USB cable.

    Rode NTG4+ reviews

NTG4+ Shotgun Microphone with Digital Switches and Built-In Rechargeable Battery is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent audio quality! I used this mic for the first time last week and was very impressed with the audio quality and build. The on/off, -10db, high pass and boost buttons are easy to get to, and the blue LED indicator lights are easy to see. When I plugged the mic into my Zoom H5 the power light turned from blue to green, which indicated it was receiving phantom power. This is a great feature, allowing me to easily identify the setting. Since the mic has its own power I turned off the phantom power on the H5. For what you get, it's well worth the money. I'm using it with the Rode blimp and K-tek KE 79CCR boom pole.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Build, and Sound Quality Having the lithium battery inside the NTG4+ is perfect for anyone trying to do run an gun filming with a DSLR. I film on a Sony A7s and recording audio on the go can be such a hassle with external recorders, but so far I have had beautifully clean audio directly into my camera. If I am alone I typically mounting the mic to the top of my camera, or if I have a friend, I will boom the mic, and I have had great signal to noise ratio, and I have been pleasantly surprised with the audio rejection from the sides of the microphone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth Every Penny I've used this while shooting both indoor and outdoor interviews where there was a lot of background noise, and the NTG4+ did an amazing job. The quality is really fantastic. I know some people are hesitant to go with a mic that has a built-in battery, but a single charge on this thing lasts a ridiculously long time (I haven't clocked the 150 hours yet that Rode says it will give me, but I've seen nothing to make me think that estimate isn't accurate). Plus, the Power LED light will blink Orange when you're at 25%/50 hours remaining, Red at 10%/20 hours and Red Blinking at 2%/4 hours, so there's really no reason to be caught off guard by how much battery power is left when on a shoot. If you're on the fence, check out Philip Bloom's massive shotgun mic blog post where he posted comparisons that you can listen to between the NTG1, 2, 3, 4 and 4+ along with some others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Mic for the price I rented this out from lens rental to test it out and see how well it performed. Surprisingly this lil' guy delivered spot on crisp dialogue. The simple interface of choosing lo-pass or hi-pass filtering was extremely easy to do on the fly when certain unwanted sounds or drones would occur. The -10 db switching is an option as well but I didn't need to use it since this project was an interview setting and not really needed for any explosions or screaming effects. I hooked it up via the Zoom H6 and using my Sennheiser Pro 280 headphones, the project went smoothly without any hiccups or issues. Also knowing that a fully charged NTG4+ via lithium ion meant ease of mind when operating and not worrying about whether I had batteries to replace in case. All in all, I will definitely be picking up one of these and couldn't be happier with the results!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy with the mic I am not an audiophile, but as a videophile I work with audio all the time. I'd say my discerning ear is middle of the road. With that disclaimer... I have worked with the ME66, MKE600 and AT4037a shotguns extensively in the past. I picked up the NTG4+ after much debate and without much info on the web. As such, was nervous to buy this blind but I have been very pleased with the NTG4+, the sound quality sounds cleaner and just flat out better (to my ears at least) than the mics I mentioned above. I have been running it with Low pass & high boost enabled in a zeppelin and dead cat exclusively for my tests but this is fitting my needs very well. As far as the battery, I know that freaks some people out - but I've left it on without charging multiple days in a row for shoots and it's still green (it gives different colors when you are at 20 hours and 10 hours remaining and I haven't even hit that yet). And yes, I have had a backup mic available. Seeing as how it can charge to 80% in just over an hour off a little USB battery pack or any USB charging port, this works a lot better for me personally than AA or AAA batteries. All in all, definitely happy with the purchase. No complaints and to my ears, the sound quality is very good - better than anything I've had in the past, and I find it highly unlikely that anyone other than the most intensely critical audiophiles would ever complain about the sound quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rode NTG4+ a great deal I am a videographer who was brought up through television news and moved into production a few years ago. I like the Rode NTG4+ for my work. I use wireless lav mics for interviews and most conference coverage but need to have a quality shotgun for ambient room sound back up, especially when Q&A takes place at conferences. So far this mic has been doing a fine job but I did notice that any touch of the mic and even some camera movements will be reflected in a loud bass noise. The mic came with the wrong size camera mount and no pouch which was to be included. Strange since it had a seal so I don't think it was a return. I was not sure I would like the non changeable rechargeable battery but the life is really long so I should never have it die in the middle of a shoot and if I do it is my fault. I would suggest this to others but perhaps open the box while at the store to be sure it has all the proper parts.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Value Shotgun Microphone I use the product in my 3 & 4th channel of my Tascam DR-60d while running wireless lavs in my channel 1 & 2 inputs. This shotgun is great because I needed a mic that provided its own power because that input doesnt have its own phantom power. So far great sound quality, Battery life is good also. Been shooting a lot with it and no need to recharge yet. REMEMBER TO TURN IT OFF!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great so far! Extremely easy to set up, and nice to have a battery-powered mic on set. We're using it for interviews and voice over, and the sound quality is excellent so far. No downsides so far!
