Vello Fusion Basic Overview

The FreeWave Fusion Basic 2.4 GHz Wireless Trigger System for Sony Multi Interface Shoe from Vello is a versatile, reliable remote control kit that will trigger a camera, shoe mount flash, and studio lights from up to 328' away. Sixteen discrete channels provide the ability to avoid interference from other users while maximizing your creative potential.

Use the system to expand the capabilities of a shoe mount flash or studio lights without the hassle of tangled PC cords. The FreeWave system is also great for capturing wildlife. Simply place the camera on a tripod and use the FreeWave Fusion trigger as a remote camera release from a distance. The trigger allows camera's shutter remotely to avoid unwanted camera vibration for sharper macro imaging. The 2.4GHz radio signal will pass through walls, windows, floors, and other obstructions.

The FreeWave Fusion Basic 2.4 GHz Flash Trigger Set is compatible with most major manufacturers' shoe-mount flashes with manual power control. Pentax, and Sony Minolta-type shoes are not compatible. Each unit runs off two AAA batteries (not included).

Wireless Triggering
The FreeWave Fusion Basic can wirelessly trigger hot shoe flashes, studio lights, or a camera from up to 328' away. It can also be used as a wireless "cable release" for wildlife or on a tripod for macro work.
2.4 GHz Frequency Signal
This low frequency signal can pass through and around obstructions offering greater flexibility in placement of flash units and cameras.
Flash Sync up to 1/250 sec
Take advantage of sync speeds that match the synch speed rating of a camera up to 1/250 sec.
16 Channels
The wireless system's 16 channels allow transmitter/receiver settings to be changed to avoid interference from other wireless devices.
Multi-Purpose Flash Trigger
Multiple receivers to trigger many flashes may be used with a single transmitter. Multiple cameras may also be triggered with additional receivers and shutter release cables.
LED Indicators
Confirm communication of trigger system with pre-focus, shutter release, and flash trigger in wireless mode.
Long Exposure Photography
Use the FreeWave Fusion Basic on a tripod with a camera's Bulb setting to make exposures as long as the camera will support without touching the camera.
Dual-Function Shutter Release Button
Press halfway to focus, press fully to trigger the shutter.
Wildlife Photography
Release the shutter from a safe distance for photos of hard to approach wildlife.
Macro Photography
Use the transmitter as a wireless "cable release" to avoid accidental movement when shooting close-up.
Single Shot and Continuous Shooting Modes
Allows the cameras motor drive to be used for rapid sequences.

It stopped working -- Will return it

A few days after I wrote my favorable review below (5/4/2026), the transmitter and receivers now malfunction roughly 9 out of 10 times. I put new batteries in the transmitter, receivers, and flash units. I also verified that the flashes were operational and ready to fire. However, the transmitter/receivers now fail to trigger to flashes most of the time. I'm returning this Vello system.

Works great as an off-camera flash trigger with my Nikon Z50 and SB-700. I primarily focus on photographing fungi these days and this setup allows me greater control over my light source, so I'm pretty happy. It's a bit of a bummer that the flash is limited to Manual mode rather than having TTL available; however, as someone whose early workhorse light source was a Vivitar 283, metering and making adjustments is still part of my muscle memory.

I do not see A7C on list. Can I use this to trigger my camera as a Bluetooth remote has horrible range?

The Vello FreeWave Fusion Basic 2.4 GHz Wireless Trigger System for Sony Multi Interface Shoe can be used as a remote for flashes. But the flash will only work in manual with the Sony A7C. And it can not be used as a remote shutter.

The Vello FreeWave Fusion Basic 2.4 GHz Wireless Trigger System for Sony Multi Interface Shoe (B&H# VEFWB24SMI) is incompatible with the Sony a6700 Mirrorless Camera (B&H# SOA6700) -- at least with the firmware of the a6700 at the time of its release. (It should be noted that we are not expecting an update to firmware to make it directly compatible with any USB-based remote, however, because with its recent cameras Sony has generally chosen to allow only WiFi, Bluetooth, and USB tethering as means of remote control for most of its cameras that do not have a micro USB port.) However, it is possible to trigger the shutter of the a6700 remotely from a computer or mobile device connected to it wirelessly, or to its USB-C port when operated tethered. The Vello FreeWave Fusion Basic 2.4 GHz Wireless Trigger System for Sony Multi Interface Shoe are manual. Yes, it will work with Sony brand flashes. The flashes need to be set to manual.

Yes, the Vello FreeWave Fusion Basic 2.4 GHz Wireless Trigger System for Sony Multi Interface Shoe (B&H# VEFWB24SMI) can serve as a remote flash trigger with many Sony cameras that have a Micro USB port labeled "Multi." Also, the option to use a remote release will likely need to be enabled in the camera's settings. The Vello FreeWave Fusion Basic 2.4 GHz Wireless Trigger System for Sony Multi Interface Shoe is not designed for use with standard camera hot shoes. Sony Multi-Interface hot shoe has a row of pins that, in other cameras, can potentiality be shorted and may cause the unit to not function correctly. I would instead recommend the Vello FreeWave Fusion Basic 2.4 GHz Wireless Trigger System for Canon, B&H # VEFWB24C, for use with older cameras with manual hot shoes.
