Sigma 30mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

A fast, versatile prime, this 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens from Sigma is designed for Micro Four Thirds system mirrorless cameras, where it provides a 60mm equivalent focal length. The bright f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords extensive control over focus placement for using selective focus techniques. In regard to the optical design, one aspherical element and one double-sided aspherical element pair to significantly reduce spherical aberrations for increased clarity and definition for notably sharp image quality. A high-refractive index element is also featured, to minimize color fringing and chromatic aberrations, and a Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to control lens flare and ghosting in strong lighting conditions. Additionally, benefitting both stills shooting and video recording, this compact prime also incorporates a stepping AF motor or smooth, near-silent autofocus performance. Designed as a versatile standard lens, the mixture of speed and optical prowess make this a go-to lens for mirrorless shooters.

A truly versatile slightly-longer-than-normal prime, this 30mm lens is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras where it provides a 60mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also affords greater focus control for producing shallow depth of field effects.
One aspherical element and one double-sided aspherical element control a range of spherical aberrations and distortions for increased sharpness and resolution. Additionally, a high-refractive index, high-dispersion glass element is also integrated into the design, and offers anomalous partial dispersion characteristics to control chromatic aberrations and reduce color fringing.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
A stepping AF motor benefits both photographers and videographers with its fast, precise, and near-silent performance.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. The outside of the lens barrel is also engraved with the year of production.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.

    Sigma 30mm f/1.4 reviews

30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Micro Four Thirds is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent addition to M43 I shoot about anything and a 30mm f1.4 is an everything lens, street scenes, street portraits, detail, night scenes, this is the diverse prime I must use. I've compared it to an Olympus 50mm f2 macro and this lens is in the same league but with all the newer focusing technology. Like the 50mm, this 30mm gets excellent quality wide open so lends to great isolation and soft bokeh. It was really worth taking time to read reviews on it but for the near $300 price tag, it didn't take long to realize this may be the best bargain in my M43 bag along with my Lumix 30mm macro for close ups. Guess I'd missed the Leica R 60mm Elmarit or Nikon micro too much until now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One superb buy! I have wanted a lens in the 50-60mm f1/4 range for my OMD-1 for some time now, and was ready to purchase the new Oly 25mm f.1/4 PRO, except it wasn't in stock. I researched and decided to get this one because the reviews were generally positive and the price point was unbelievably cheap. Did I expect the same quality of product which I would get from the PRO lens? No, but the build quality is slightly better than what I expected and this lens exceeded my expectations in terms of sharpness and IQ to the point that I think I can wait a little longer before buying the Oly. This may be one of the few real optical bargains available that I am happy to recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A nice find I was ready to buy the new 25mm f.1/2 pro, and was very disappointed when it wasn't in stock. I wanted something in the 25-30mm range that I could use for portraits and work in low light when I discovered this gem. I did the research, read the reviews, and bought this to use for a project I am doing over the holidays. For the money, I wasn't expecting much in terms of build quality and was pleased that it was better than anticipated. I did, however, expect it to be sharp and have decent IQ, which it does. This may be one of those rare finds of quality optics at an amazingly low price, that should work fine for my needs. It is a nice product that surpasses the expectations of the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best kept secret! As another reviewer noted, there is little info online or in print regarding this lens. I had wanted something similar to my fav Nikon 50mm 1.4 for my omd system, but there wasn't much out there which was as reasonably priced as the Nikon for m.4/3. I stumbled upon this lens browsing the B&H app, and took a chance. While it certainly doesn't have the build quality of my Olympus pro lenses- it is nice for the money. The IQ was outstanding and this lens easily outperformed any expectations I had due to the low price. I think it is one of the better deals out there!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW!! Outstanding I have been waiting for a thorough review of this lens in the M43's mount before deciding whether or not I wanted to purchase. A little earlier this month did such a review. I ordered mine the same day I read the review. It not only broke their records for highest resolution in the M43's lenses, it also did extremely well in their coma, bokeh and many other tests. At nearly half the price of the Pany 25 f1.4 it was a no brainer. The performance of these two lenses is nearly identical. You would never see the difference between the two in real world use. I probably would not have purchased this lens if video was my primary reason as it's manual focus is focus by wire. This lens is very sharp wide open and focuses fast with no noise. It does have some purple fringing wide open, but diminishes greatly by f2.0.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent lens Although it is a little large for a format called micro-4/3, it seems these larger size lenses are a result of advanced designs which allow for more light intake and less overall issues between the lens and sensor. But the slightly larger size is a mild trade-off for the quality. And, its really not a heavy lens, and balances well on my olympus Pen-F. Image quality is superb. Very natural feeling to the photos, without any brittleness that I sometimes see with M4/3. The autofocus is fast and accurate. the color rendition reminds me of the Panaleica lenses. Overall a good purchase - and the price is a big plus! It's been glued to my Pen-F since I got it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Even better than expected. I was looking for a prime lens for use in low light situations, and after some research I settled on this lens. Although it has an unpopular focal length, I find it to be more natural and less distorting than the typical normal Micro Four Thirds focal length, 25mm. I tested it's light gathering at its widest aperture and, to my surprise, it is even capable of seeing my shadow cast solely by a Half Moon, albeit barely and at ISO 12,800. Although I bought it for it's low light performance, the shallow depth of field is a nice addition. Some say that it's a bit too large and heavy for a MFT prime, but, at roughly the same size and weight of my Panasonic 14-140 3.5-5.6, it feels fine to me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens! I am mostly a hobbyist, and this lens fit everything that I had wanted as my first lens purchase on my Panasonic G7. I take an equal amount of stills as I do videos, and the lens is super sharp on both, the image quality is amazing. I was wary at first about not having image stabilization in the lens (Panasonic G7 lacks this in body) but so far I have had very little issue. At f/1.4 the lens is fast and gets the job done. The autofocus is a bit slower on my Panasonic compared to the Panasonic lenses, but it is still fairly quick. The focus ring does not stop which takes some getting used to. The build quality is solid, made of some plastic but it will feel very solid in your hands. The lens is the best you'll get with the price! Overall, I love this lens and take it with me wherever I go. I would definitely recommend this lens to any Micro Four Thirds owner.
