Sigma 16mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

Mixing a comfortable wide-angle design with an ultra-fast maximum aperture, this 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens from Sigma is a 32mm-equivalent prime for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Characterized by its bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, this lens is adept at working in low-light conditions, and also affords increased control over depth of field for selective focus control. The optical design makes use of several low dispersion and aspherical glass elements to control color fringing and various aberrations in order to provide high sharpness and clarity throughout the aperture range. Individual elements also feature Sigma's Super Multi-Layer Coating to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions. Benefitting the optical assets, this lens also sports a stepping AF motor for quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance that suits both still photography as well as video applications. Additionally, a weather-sealed, durable construction enables this 16mm f/1.4 to excel in inclement weather conditions.

A wide-angle prime, this 16mm f/1.4 is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 32mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also affords greater focus control for producing shallow depth of field effects.
The optical design incorporates three FLD elements, two SLD elements, and two molded aspherical elements to help reduce color fringing, chromatic aberrations, and spherical aberrations for notable sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy from edge to edge.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Stepping AF motor benefits both photographers and videographers with its fast, precise, and near-silent performance.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Dust- and splash-resistant design permits this lens's use in trying weather conditions.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. The outside of the lens barrel is also engraved with the year of production.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.

    Sigma 16mm f/1.4 reviews

16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Micro Four Thirds is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Value! At less than half the price of the new Olympus 17mm Pro f/1.2 this lens is an excellent value. Though it is a bit slower (f/1.4) than its counterpart, the optical quality of this lens is second to none. I bought it for indoor photography under low light coupled to my Olympus OM-D EM-1 Mark II. While the lens looks very plain it has a nice solid quality about it. I have the Olympus 25 mm f/1.2 and was somewhat disappointed by the lack of sharpness. I hope someone compares this Sigma lens to the Olympus 17 mm Pro f/1.2. I would like to know how they stack up against each other. Hats off to Sigma for making a great lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens, great value... I have the PL 15 f1.7 and sharpness wise this gives up nothing to that lens. Importantly to my work though is the extra 2/3 stop of light. I do a lot of low light documentary work, and the need for speed is always there. Color, contrast and out of focus rendition are top notch, and it shows excellent resistance to flare in strong backlight conditions. The AF is fast and silent too. All in all, a great companion to the Sigma 30mm f1.4.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Its a keeper. I can't see the Olympus lens being $750.00 "Better"...... Sigma did a fine job here, and on my EM1mkii, I'm Completely satisfied. No complaints about size or weight.....In line with my Oly 25mm 1.2. No doubt I will try the Oly 17 1.2......We'll see......But as for now......... Nice Job Sigma.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a very special lens for micro 4/3 I bought this lens to do some indoor architectural photography and low light technology photos. It's certainly the best image quality I've gotten in the 4/3 format; even fully open the image is sharp, with no significant uncorrectable distortions. Bokeh looks great. I do like the 32mm equivalent field of view, it's a useful angle and slightly wider alternative to the classic 35mm.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very solid I was looking for a replacement for my well used 17mm f/2.8 Olympus. I was pretty unhappy with a Sigma Art lens I purchased with the MFT mount but I decided to take a chance on this lens. I am happy overall that I took the chance. At this point I I have run about 200 shots through the lens mounted on my G9 and GX85 in a variety of lighting conditions. Biggest positive is it is a very sharp lens. It is also fairly lightweight. The focus ring is also very smooth. I do find some minor things to complain about. The first is that the lens is not very contrasty. One of the things I love about using MFT cams as my walk around cams are the Leica lenses which require zero contrast adjustments in post. Pics from this lens can of course be improved after the fact - so not a huge deal. The only other quibble is that the focus is a bit slow compared to the Olympus it replaces - but still very acceptable. Overall this is looking like a good replacement for the Olympus. Not a 5 star product but it is a good lens and a big bargain. 4.5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Lens is Just Amazing.!!! I bought this lens for my Panasonic G9, which is an amazing Video & Still Camera. I use it for Wedding Video, to replace my Nikon D7100 bodies. I tried still images, and the skin tones look very pleasant, not too much contrast, and also this camera works well-easy to set up Menu... Lens Review: For Wedding Video, My Rig consisted of : Feiyu Tech a2000 3-axis gimbal, Panasonic G9, and the Contemporary DC 16mm f1.4 This lens works fantastic, the autofocus is great, the bokeh is lovely, and it seems like perfection that was built very well. The Hood stays on and does not loosen up, also the Manual-focus ring is smooth even though it is only "focus by wire" . I love this lens and recommend it. I recently filmed some close up work, shooting Food ( BBQ Ribs on a hot Grille ) for part of a restaurant commercial, the minimum focus distance was exactly what I needed. I am now thinking of also buying the Sigma 30mm f1.4 contemporary lens, and also another G9 Body-"the 4k 60p from this camera is Stellar". I have the Olympus 12-40mm f2.8. it works great, the manual clutch is great, and autofocus with my G9 is also amazing, but this Sigma Line of lenses has gotten me really considering investing more into the Sigma Contemporary line of lenses... I used an ND8 filter when outside to get the exposure down low enough to use the wonderful F1.4 wide open. I also tried a few quick focus burst still images to check the focus for shooting images... Focus was dead on every time.. ( average of 20 random quick focus still images ) So to wrap things up, this lens is highly recommended, it is a direct fit for the M43 system, no lens adapters, all functions work, Lens is made well, does not feel cheap, weight is perfect, seems like you have a good piece of glass on your camera. Hope this review helps someone make a good decision. I am very happy with this lens purchase, and very Satisfied with B & H...

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Obviously designed for Apsc Mirrorless systems It's a pity Sigma would release this lens for m4/3 Mirrorless systems without completely redesigning the lens to have the same FOV as the Apsc copy. Effectively this lens is a 32mm on M4/3 meanwhile the same lens on Apsc covers 24mm focal length (far more desirable and practical) Images are indeed sharp just not as sharp as they would be on an Apsc sized sensor.
