Will this work with the 70-200mm f4?
No.
You need the HB-60 made for the 70-200 f4.
The HB-78 is designed for the 70-200 f2.8 where the front element is 10mm larger. If you buy this hood it won’t fit.

Will it work on version 2?
Yes... I was working with another companies gear the other week (D800E with 70-200mm f2.8 VRII) and I lost the lens hood (out the door of a helicopter, but fortunately in a remote forest). I had my own gear with me, and so I put my lens hood from the new 70-200mm f2.8 FL ED lens onto the VRII and it worked perfectly. I left the new lens hood with the older lens, and I bought this hood to replace mine. The advantage this hood has over the older version is that it is a little deeper and it gives more protection from stray light!
