    Really Right Stuff TA-3-LC-HK Reviews

    Great leveling base

The leveling base I purchased is the TA-3-LC-HK, which has an Arca-Swiss compatible clamp on top and the longest handle knob. In the past, I have had to adjust the length of the legs to get them level, but this can be tedious and time consuming. This leveling base solves that problem in one fell swoop. I also purchased the TH-DVTL-55 (Round Dovetail Plate), which make it easier to change the head. It is very useful for leveling the camera and also for changing the head.

    Solid! Worth the money

This is a great leveling base. I’m glad I spent the money. It’s very smooth and locks up extremely tight when needed. Only way to go running heavy rifles.

Solid, well designed. Reeks of quality.

This is built with high standards and precision. I like the long handle, its really easy to grab and make micro adjustments. If you like to lay your tripod flat you may want to opt for the shorter or no stem version. I put this on a RRS Versa Series Tripod, but should work perfect for a Gitzo or ProMedia Gear tripod. I use a Gimba head and a BH-55 ball head on it, the quick release handle is secure and high quality. This really simplifies the leveling process, no more fussing with leg adjustments. If you are only going to use one type of Tripod Head you probably won't need the quick release clamp. HIGHLY Recommend

A must-have for pano-gimbal work and video work.

If you use a Really Right Stuff Pano-Gimbal head OR the Really Right Stuff FH-350 fluid-head OR by pure habit use a leveling base with a ball-head, I highly recommend this leveling base. The clamp is crucial for switching between various heads. If working at minimum height with your Series 3 tripod is of utmost importance, I recommend ordering the Leveling Base with the 2.5 handle directly through Really Right Stuff (as B&H doesn't sell that model). The 4.5 handle with thehook in this model is a bit long for ground clearance. If you value having the hook as well the extended handle for easier adjustments, this is for you. Note: All the handles can be sold separately, so you can buy this leveling base, buy another handle, and switch the different handles in and out depending on your needs.

    Great Accessory

The RRS TA-3 is a nice accessory for their Versa Series 3 line of tripods. It allows you to quickly and easily adjust and level your head, or whatever else you want to attach to your tripod. The only thing I didn't realize when purchasing the TA-3, to use with a TVC-34L tripod, is that I can't slam the tripod to it's lowest setting because of the hook. It's not a huge issue, but something to be aware of if you're looking to get low.

    Incredible!

What can I say, it's Really Right Stuff. Super smooth operation with rock solid engagement when tightened. I use this for spotting and ranging targets at long distance and shooting a 15lb rifle from a tripod.

This is exactly what I thought it would be! Works just as I had hoped, I like the longer handle/clamp and the hook for adding a bit of weight when needed. Two Thumbs up!

    Perfect except weak torque capacity

    By John

Ive been using the TA-3 Leveling Base for several months now, mounted on a RRS TVC-34L tripod. The design makes it very easy to level my ball heads or gimbal heads, simply twist counter-clockwise to loosen, pull straight down to get it in the vicinity of level, fine tune with the bubble, and a quick clockwise twist to lock it. Super easy, and very ergonomic. However...the specifications say that it only has 25 lbs of load capacity, which I interpret to mean 25 lb-ft of torque capacity in this case (only torque matters). Usually with camera support gear the stated capacity specifications are conservative, and the actual load capacities are much larger in practice. However, even when I tighten the TA-3 to my maximum hand strength, I find that the lock is unfortunately weak. I would say that the torque capacity is actually somewhat less than 25 lb-ft, but I havent measured this precisely (and anyways doing so intentionally could damage the locking mechanism, and I have no desire to do so). Now that I know about this problem, I can easily avoid it in most of the work I do, so it isnt a critical flaw. RRS does not offer any stronger options for leveling bases in this particular generation of tripods, the TA-3 is it. If my work required stronger support, then I would have to swap out the TA-3 and go for a strong ball head (such as the BH-55) instead. If your own work will regularly require leveling and sustaining large torque loads, then I would not recommend the TA-3.

    question

Can this be used in any 75mm bowl?
    Asked by: Sage R.
This can fit other 75mm bowl, but with caveat. The RRS video ball is very shallow, so the stem of the screw used to connect the bottom handle is shorter than most of other similar type of leveling base. For example, with a Leofoto/Robus/Induro/Benro video bowl which is a lot deeper, it needs only about 3 turns to complete loose the handle. There is a lot of stress on those three threads too so I would not recommend this for other video bowls.

    question

What would be the advantage of using this vs the universal leveling base?
    Asked by: Rustin
The bowl is down in the tripod platform, and one handed tightening for heavier loads is easier. I have used the universal and the TA-3, I dont care for the Universal at all, but really like the TA-3. I can lock the load level much easier, and have a finer control over how much it can slip, for example, if I want to pan.
