    APC Back-UPS Pro Reviews

Powerful backup when power is shut off

I live in an area with frequent power disruptions, like a heavy snowfall which shut off power for 2 weeks the day after Xmas. Our propane generator has voltage fluctuations when motors start up (refrigerator, etc). My original battery back-up was getting old and my computer system shut down whenever this happened. I hope this new (more powerful) system will prevent this disruption in the future. However, I am NOT turning off power for another 2 weeks just to test this new system.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've purchased several of these APC 1500 Pro backup units for my customers and couldn't be more please. Great value and features. LCD makes it easy to check status and health of unit. This is my "go to" for most server and network deployments.

    Shorted out

The unit would not self-test. Got in touch with APC tech support which suggested a solution. Followed the directions (which involved complete shut-down and unplugging everything). Then after reapplication of power and plugging in the computer and monitor ran self-test. Heard loud pop from unit followed by smoke issuing from the top. Contacted APC tech support which authorized RMA and immediately sent new unit which seems to be working just fine. I have used APC UPS units for many years and this is the only problem I have ever had.

Worse than plugging straight into wall :(

Unfortunately, I seem to have gotten one of the bad ones. Started with the front plastic being cracked, but that was just aesthetic. Then, utility-wise, there have been a couple of power losses in the months that I've had it, and never once has it kicked over to battery power (which has always read full). More than that, sometimes it will just turn off and deliver immediate loss of power to all devices, even when the wall outlet is fine, so I'm actually worse off than before. I felt hesitant in ordering this because of the reviews I read like this, and that fear has been realized. Love what it's supposed to do, but so far it does more harm than good.

Battery slips and disconnects standing up

Unfortunately, the battery holder compartment has no way to hold the battery in place (at least in my version). So when you put the device standing upright, the battery falls due to gravity and gets disconnected. The only way to make it work is to use it upside down or sideways. This must be addressed.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a great unit for its size, we use 6 + in our network closets to keep our NVR running in the event of a power surge or outage so we can safety shut them down properly

Hello, Since this unit is Simulated Sine Wave ...

Hello, Since this unit is Simulated Sine Wave will it be able to power my G Tech External Hard Drives for about 10 minutes? That is of course depending on how many hard drives I have connected. Usually 3-5. Or will I need a Pure Sine Wave unit? Also I reside in the Philippines and the Voltage here is 220 Volts. Can I connect this unit to a Voltage Reducer? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank You. John
    Asked by: John
I back up G Tech external RAID systems, and many other digital electronics, with this specific APC unit and have never seen problems. The runtime on battery will depend on the entire load. You can run a 120V UPS from a 220V main for 120V loads with a permanently-connected and properly-sized (big, heavy) step-down transformer, but other voltage reducers are not going to work.

I plan on mounting the APC battery inside a Pelican case -- does the APC need airflow around it and can it be safely used while on it's side? Any heating issues while it's in use?
    Asked by: codi
The heat generation from these units is negligible once the battery is fully charged. I have used one unit on is's side on the lowest shelf of an 18"x18"x48", enclosed/fan ventilated, media cabinet for over two years without a problem.
