Litepanels Sola 4+ overview

  • 1Description

The Litepanels Sola 4+ LED Fresnel Light builds on the solid foundation of the Sola 4 but this time with much more power. Features include thermal management through advanced hardware and software and an enhanced 5600K LED source based on the phosphor mix research that brought us the Sola 12. These changes directly affect color fidelity, garner high CRI ratings, and extend the life of the fixture.

At 15 to 71°, the 4" Fresnel has an impressively wide range of spot-to-flood adjustment and an output comparable to a 575 W HMI fixture, while drawing only 53W of power. It's also barely warm to the touch, eliminating of potential heat damage and talent discomfort. Low power consumption also means reduced HVAC costs in the studio that helps provide a rapid return of investment.

Control is at the heart of the Sola 4+ design. Dimming from 100-0% can be done locally or remotely from an optional console with DMX. The Sola 4+ runs on 120-240 VAC mains power for worldwide use but can also run on optional 14-28 VDC battery sources. The lack of an external ballast trims down the fixture's form factor and allows it to weigh in at just 3.6 lb. Four-way barndoors are included for even greater control of the Sola 4+'s beam spread. If previous generations caught your eye, now is the time to check out the Sola 4+.

  • 4-Way Barndoors for Sola 4

This Litepanels 4-Way Barndoors for Sola 4 Fresnel fits into the Sola's filter slots and rotates 360°. The lightweight, matte black metal leaves fold inward or outward to control or block off areas of the light beam.

This Litepanels Yoke Kit for Sola 4 and Inca 4 is a replacement fot the yoke that ships with the Sola 4 and Inca 4. The kit does not include knobs, which are available for separate purchase.

Litepanels Sola 4+ reviews

Sola 4+ LED Fresnel Light is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for a back light. I bought this Sola 4+ fresnel for use as a back light in a typical 3 point lighting scenario. It fits the bill quite well I think. I considered the ARRI L5 for this because it is bi-color, but my budget didn't quite allow for it, so the Sola 4+ was the next best option. The Sola 4+ is light enough to place on a boom without excessive counterweights and allows for easy rigging. The fixture is mostly plastic which gives it a bit of a cheap feel however. The barn doors have plastic hinges but the doors are aluminum. Considering the plastic makes it light weight, which is a huge bonus if you are travelling with this fixture, I think it is a reasonable trade off. The focus range allows fine tuning and quite a narrow spot. Fan is quite enough that most audio situations would not pick it up. The fixture has a small form factor but it packs a pretty good punch for its size. Because it is only daylight balanced, I purchased the 5 piece CTO pack which includes a opal frost diffusion. Not sure I will use the DMX function but it's nice to know it's there incase I do. Overall, I think this light is a pretty good value but it needs to be handled and packed carefully to avoid possible damage. I gave the Sola 4+ five stars because it met my expectations based on the advertising and published specs. Now Litepanels needs to make a bi-color version of this fresnel to truly perfect it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile, small, and powerful Even with so many new choices in LED hard light sources (fresnel or par style), this remains a strong option. Pros: *Useful amount of power. It has nowhere near the output of a 575W HMI-- a silly claim on the part of Litepanels. But instead, the 4+ is fairly comparable to a 650W tungsten fresnel. It won't fight direct sunlight, but you can use it in a room that does have indirect window light in the background. And you can also diffuse it or bounce it and still get a 2.8 or 4 at ISO 800. *One of its chief virtues is that it's small and light-- an inch smaller in each dimension than an Arri 650, and half the weight. You can fold up the barn doors and throw it in a backpack, you can mount it on a travel stand. *Versatile. Unlike some other new hard lights, you don't need an extra box of attachments (reflectors, fresnel attachment, etc.) to make it do something useful. It has a great flood-to-spot range. You can use it as a key (with diffusion) at lower light levels, raise ambient levels a bit by bouncing into the ceiling, or use it as a hair light to a more powerful key light. Cons: -it's not the cleanest-edged beam. But it's not bad-- the barn doors work. Less than an Arri fresnel, but better than, say, the Aputure fresnel attachment. (Not hating, I do like Aputure's stuff.) -the trade-off for the light weight is that it's made of sturdy plastic. I think this will be fine for me, but I wouldn't rent it to a student film. -I wish the included power cable were a little longer, but it is replaceable with an inexpensive generic. -Price: I think this light represents a pretty good balance of traits, and so it's a reasonable value. That said, there are cases where you'd be better off with an Aputure light with more output for the same or less money, or with a light from Hive that offers a huge range of color in a similarly small package.
