Lensbaby Sweet 80 Reviews

Lansbaby's Are A Lot of Fun and a Lot of Work

I've been a long time user of Lensbaby products. This was an upgrade from the original Composer and the addition of the 80mm Sweet Optic. It's a wonderful combination... BUT, new owners beware that removing the optic can be challenging unless you know what to do. Lensbaby has not done a good job of explaining that different optics require a different technique to remove. I was totally frustrated until I realized that the Sweet 80 is different from the Sweet 35 that I've used for years. All that said, I love shooting with Lenbabys.

I bought this lens mostly for it's novelty and price point. While I do have a Tilt/ Shift lens, this lens is small and I am comfortable letting my kids use it without supervision which I would not do with the TS lens. The lens is sharp and adds some interesting focal plain distortion. I have taken some nice shots with it. The ability to get close up shots is an appreciated aspect as well.

I've wanted to try the lensbaby system again for a while and when this went on sale I decided to give it a try. Haven't been able to do much except around the house because of the weather but I think I will get some use out of this. I spent decades with manual focus so that is no problem for me. If you haven't had much experience with manual focus it may take you some time to dial this in.

Its been so much fun experimenting with the various boken effects I can create - spectacular flower effects and abstract images. A bit  of a learning curve as focusing an image is challenging but once learnt, the effect is magical. Recommend it for creative effects.

Different but beautiful!

I am shooting this lens on my Leica M10R with an adapter ring. I can get reasonably sharp focus in the sweet spot but the best feature of this lens is the control of the bokeh and focus fall off creating beautiful dreamy artistic images. I wish I had purchased years ago!

Cool lens but learning curve

The lens will take a while to learn. It’s not easy by any measure. Manual focus plus learning how to adjust and where the focus is. Takes time to master.

what is the difference between the 'sweet' ...

what is the difference between the 'sweet' version and the 'edge' version?
Asked by: Jon
The main difference would be the shape of the blur/bokeh pattern created by the lens. The Lensbaby "Sweet" lenses create a rounder radial bokeh blur pattern, while the Lensbaby Edge creates a straight 'slice' (think more rectangular) bokeh blur pattern. The size and amount of the blur with both lenses can be controlled by the aperture you choose, and the strength and position of the blur can be controlled by the position of the lens.

question

I'm looking for a versatile medium telephto lens for both photo and video. The lensbaby is intriguing. Can I enlarge the in-focus area enough to use it as a true telephoto to capture video simply by stopping down the aperture? Has anyone experience using this lens for video?
Asked by: John
Hi John, This lens can be used for video but it is not a telephoto lens.
