Sigma 16mm f/1.4 Overview

  • 1Description

Mixing a comfortable wide-angle design with an ultra-fast maximum aperture, this 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens from Sigma is a 24mm-equivalent prime for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Characterized by its bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, this lens is adept at working in low-light conditions, and also affords increased control over depth of field for selective focus control. The optical design makes use of several low dispersion and aspherical glass elements to control color fringing and various aberrations in order to provide high sharpness and clarity throughout the aperture range. Individual elements also feature Sigma's Super Multi-Layer Coating to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions. Benefitting the optical assets, this lens also sports a stepping AF motor for quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance that suits both still photography as well as video applications. Additionally, a weather-sealed, durable construction enables this 16mm f/1.4 to excel in inclement weather conditions.

A wide-angle prime, this 16mm f/1.4 is designed for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 24mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also affords greater focus control for producing shallow depth of field effects.
The optical design incorporates three FLD elements, two SLD elements, and two molded aspherical elements to help reduce color fringing, chromatic aberrations, and spherical aberrations for notable sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy from edge to edge.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Stepping AF motor benefits both photographers and videographers with its fast, precise, and near-silent performance.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Dust- and splash-resistant design permits this lens's use in trying weather conditions.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. The outside of the lens barrel is also engraved with the year of production.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.

    Sigma 16mm f/1.4 Reviews

16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 89.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sharp and promising for stills and video. I’ve use nearly every lens available for Sony‘s APS-C mount. This is among the sharpest of all of them. It reminds me of their 30 mm f/1.4 which is also well known for its sharpness. Chromatic aberration seems very well managed. The bokeh is very nice and round at 1.4 which is a really great thing to see on such a wide lens. FOR VIDEO some people have had concerns about it making noise. I'm not sure about internal mic because I never use that, but with a Rode VideoMicro attached autofocus motor noise is almost zero when I turn my computer volume up full blast when playing back a clip recorded in a quiet room.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Completed my a6500 collection Pictures and Video I take with this lens look great on my 65 inch Sony UHD Tv. The colors are closer to Canon than the Sony lenses which to my eye look white washed. I really think the a6500 + Sigma colors look more natural than my Canon actually. In my book the lenses to get for the Sony A6500 are a Sigma 30 1.4 , 16 1.4 and the Zeiss 16-70 f4 yet agian better color than Sony . With these lenses I have a lens for just about everything. They are also the sharpest without stepping up to full frame. A con would be the weight of the 16 being my heaviest lens but for what you get it's a trade off I will take any day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thank you, Sigma! I can't say much that everyone else has already said. It's sharp, it's fast, it's fun to use, and it's been on my camera 80% of the time since I purchased it. Having a camera with a stabilized sensor is the best way to get the most out of it, in my opinion. I've used this lens for astrophotography, landscapes, videography, and even the occasional portrait. The autofocus is great, but in quiet situations it can be heard so plan your audio set ups accordingly. The fly-by-wire manual focus has improved a bit from the 30mm f/1.4, but I still avoid using it since the Sony's autofocus works just fine for my purposes. Hopefully Sigma continues to produce these awesome lenses for APS-C!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific Lens with One Easily Solved Problem Absolutely sharp lens, nearly perfect from f4.0 with one little problem. I discovered that f2.0 was quite fuzzy unless I focused manually.? I was all set to return the lens until I read that this lens on a Sony camera has this little flaw unless one sets ?"Live View Display" to "Setting Effect Off."? Focus is now perfect with this adjusted setting.? I really hope that Sigma or Sony or perhaps both can make some sort of adjustment to alleviate this situation.? This is a wonderful lens that compliments my new18-135 perfectly!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything I expected and more As a nightlife content creator, this lens is an absolute MUST. It is a beast in lowlight, and I'm still shocked at how accurate and fast the autofocus is paired with my a6500. Keep in mind that being a wide-angle at 16mm, there is a hint of distortion, but too much. Definitely a killer combo with the 30mm 1.4, cannot wait for Sigma's telephoto 1.4 for E-mount, will be buying it without hesitation after the incredible experiences I've had with Sigma's 16mm and 30mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spectacular!! I have a dozen E and FE mount lenses, and this 16mm goes to the top of my "never get rid of" list!? It is small, superb optically, immediate focus.? With its 24 mm 35mm equivalency and 1.4 aperture, it is a wonderful walk around, travel lens; comfortable to use for interiors and low light shots, street photography, landscape.? And although I don't do astrophotography, my guess is it would perform well theretoo.? All in all a near do everything well lens at an amazing price ($400 with promo code).? Go for it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing lens This lens stays on my camera most of the time.? I can now take indoor pictures at low light in tight quarters.? Before with my Sony 10-18 f4 I was limited with indoor shots because it wasn't a fast lens.? Can also be used for portraits to a degree and blows out background.? Can't get too close to subject.?? Autofocus works great in video and am able shoot f1.4 indoors with good tracking.? I use this lens on my Sony a6500.? Highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for vlogging !!! Before I ordered this lens, I use the kit lens (16-55mm) for vlogging. Although, I do have sigma 30mm f1.4 and sony 18-105 f4; however, those lenses are more for film or photo. Not for vlogging because it is so close to a subject. It is not wide enough for me. Therefore, sigma 16mm f1.4 is a perfect lens for vlogging; for the deep of field and low light situation!
