LaCie Rugged External HDD Reviews

Unreliable, not rugged

As a working professional photographer, backing up images is very important to me. This LaCie is TERRIBLE. The first one broke and LaCie thankfully replaced it, now the second one is broken, and I would really like a refund to buy a hard drive I can count on. Well LaCie/ Seagate is impossible to reach, and when I finally get through to a chat person after an hour wait (who is handling ten calls at once), they refuse a refund. Do yourself a favor, spend a little more and purchase a reliable hard drive that you can count on to save your images!

My preferred drive videography

I go through 7 or 8 external hard drives, ranging from 2 to 14 TB. I edit video in hotel rooms, airports and other odd places as I roadtrip for my job and YouTube channel. I keep coming back to this hard drive because it takes my uploads fast, works well with Final Cut and doesn't fail on sharing or rendering the project as other hard drives do. I also don't have the audio and video lose synchronization as I am editing. That happens a lot with some other drives, especially as they near bring full. Great product!

I bought this as a backup drive. I like the rubber encasing for it. So far, everything works perfectly. The only complaint is the USB-C cord going into the drive is a little loose and if you bump it, it can disconnect. Other than, works as it should!

I purchased this drive in October 2022 and it has now failed and lost my data (August 2023). It has never been brought anywhere, just sat on my desk. Will not recommend these drives to anyone.

I've bought several of these portable storage drives and they are excellent for storing my collection of photographs. B&H is a superior organization and have always come through with fine products and service.

Which would be the best match for a macBook pro macOS 10.14.6? I want to move my photo catalog to an external drive.
Asked by: Susan
I use the LaCie 5TB Rugged for LR. I have both the LR catalog and the photos on the drive. It makes it easy to access my photos from any of my MAC computers with LR installed. MacBook when traveling and iMac at home. I also regularly backup the LR catalog and photos so a dedicated backup drive. I have not noticed any speed issues with the 5TB Rugged. Its a trusted workhorse in my book!
