Lowepro 350 AW II Overview

The gray Whistler Backpack 350 AW II from Lowepro is a heavy-duty bag designed to comfortably and securely carry your mobile photo studio. The spacious main compartment features an adjustable partition system that can hold a large DSLR with an attached 70-200mm lens, six additional lenses, and a shoe mount flash or additional lens. Users of mirrorless camera systems can fit up to eight lenses along with a camera, a flash or additional lens, as well as a backup camera, and for protection of foldable drones and their flight controllers, two padded inserts feature enhanced cushioning.

Access to the main compartment is provided by a rear-facing zippered panel with a 180° downward opening. Along the inside of that zippered panel is a memory card pocket and two zippered organizer pockets for hard drives, portable batteries, camera filters, or small electronics. Separated from the main compartment by a waterproof barrier, an expandable front pocket with a bottom drain hole allows wet outdoors equipment such as a climbing helmet, shovel, or ice pick to dry even when carried inside the Whistler Backpack 350 AW II. Integrated between the main compartment and the waterproofed front pocket is a dedicated sleeve that can accommodate a 13" laptop. The laptop sleeve can be reached through a zippered top opening with capacity for books, notepads, snow goggles, or packable clothing. Along the inside the top opening is an accessory pocket for items that need to be secured, yet accessed quickly and conveniently, such as a pair of sunglasses, snacks, or headphones.

The Whistler Backpack 350 AW II can be carried via the built-in top handle, or by the adjustable, padded shoulder straps. For heavy loads, this backpack's waist belt transfers weight to the hips for additional comfort, while the sternum strap further limits unintentional shifting around the wearer. Along each side and on the front are two side-compression straps that can each hold and secure a tripod, monopod, or trekking pole. Connected to the surface of the bag with hooks that support up to 220 lb, the compression straps are suitable for skis, a snowboard, or other outdoor mountain equipment which can be harnessed and carried.

Featuring durable nylon construction, the Whistler Backpack 350 AW II is built to be weather resistant, and includes a seam-sealed cover for use under heavy rain.

Pack has a sweet design but it's uncomfortable

In my opinion... A well designed and manufactured back pack.

A little too small for 2 DSLR bodies with prime lenses + filters, batteries, blowers, timers and the like, that is what the 450 AW II is for, but... I did buy it for when I go mirrorless, and carry a more simplified kit. For now, one Nikon D810 body, 2 x lenses, 100 x 100 filter gear etc, it is great to work out of, providing you give some thought to partitioning. The ability for the bag to stand upright is a plus, as is the useful top entry opening. I find the camera weight does not drag down on the dividers if configured with camera at base, but does require a full unzip to retrieve or return it. Small price to pay for gear that remains in place while hiking.

High durability

I originally bought the whistler 350 (version1) which I really liked a lot. Then I read the design specs of version 2 and knew I needed to get it. I was carrying two backpacks for all my camera and laptop gear. I realized version two made it a lot simpler for me to also carry my laptop with its own designated spot. The other features that really stood out to me is the front zipper expands at the bottom half (ver2) instead of the top half (ver1). Seems better to have the expansion at the bottom half to stuff things “down”. Also I can adjust the padding inside to allow me to grab my camera out the top zipper, super enhancement. Although I really like the removable icu box of ver1, I felt it was better/ leaner without carrying that additional payload. It’s such a nice looking bag and doesn’t immediately appear durable, but it is a fantastically durable and high quality. I feel very confidant that this bag with keep my camera gear exceptionally safe when I put it into a challenging situation and weather.

Can you take out the entire camera insert?
Asked by: R
There is no "entire camera insert" per se, but rather the inner bag is lined with touch-fastener material that the multiple padded inserts fasten to. You can remove all these pads from the bag, but you do not get fully-separated insert to use with other bags, if that was your intention.

Can I carry a D5 with 200-400mm f/4 VR attached ...

Can I carry a D5 with 200-400mm f/4 VR attached with the hood inverted, a Nikon AF-D ED 80-200mm f/2.8 and a Sigma 24-70 2.8 Ex Dg in this model or should I upgrade to the 450 AW II? Many thanks
Asked by: Fernando
You will be best served with a larger/taller bag: the combined length of the D5 and the 200-400mm lens is about 18" and the 350 AW II has an interior camera compartment measuring 15.4". The 450 AW II's camera compartment measures 16.5", which is actually still a bit short to be ideal. If you remove the lens from the camera body, you should be able to fit everything into the smaller 350 AW II bag.

Is the Whistler 350AW ii airline carry-on compatible?
Asked by: R
Yes it is carry-on compatible. I've flown multiple times with this bag as a carry-on and never had a problem. Keep in mind it's a tight fit in the baggage compartment on a smaller regional airline. I don't always have the bag full to it's greatest capacity so always use the bag checker at the airport. This is my absolute favorite camera bag knowing my gear is well protected when traveling.
