Any lightstand will work and I've also propped it up. I recently purchased from B&H the Impact Collapsible Reflector Holder (Large). It is made to hang this background on a lightstand. Just a note it is heavy duty.

How thick is material? Can the black one be set in front of a window or would light filter through?
The pact Collapsible Background V2 (Black/White, 5 x 7') is not meant for light blocking, however in some cases it could help to flag the light out while it will depend on the strength of the light. It is not 100% light blocking.
