Savage 70 Storm Gray Overview

Photograph people and products against a smooth, uncluttered background with this 140" x 100' roll of #70 Storm Gray Seamless Background Paper from Savage. To facilitate even lighting, the surface of the paper is non-reflective and has a fine-tooth finish. In addition to photography, the paper may be used for events, decorations, banners, and more.

The paper density is 145 gsm and it has an easy-to-handle resilient thickness. For mounting on many standard background stands, it comes wound on a core with a 2.125" interior diameter. A plastic sleeve protects the roll in transit and can be saved to provide continued protection when the paper is not in use. The paper should be stored vertically to reduce the possibility of warping and other damage. Photographers often use clamps to secure the paper to a backdrop stand as well as tape to secure the paper to the floor if rolled out for full-body shots. The paper is lignin- and acid-free, pH neutral, and 100% recyclable.
Finding a Neutral Gray
Savage has a wide selection of color options, including plenty of different grays. If you are looking for a neutral gray, the recommended options would be #09 Stone Gray or the slightly darker #27 Thunder Gray. For a gray that is closest to an 18% gray card your best bet is #74 Smoke Gray.
Choosing the Right Width
When purchasing a roll of background paper, you will need to determine the best size for your subject and space. Most colors are available in a range of widths and lengths though staples, like black and white, are available in even more options. Here is a general guide to choosing the right size:
  • 26" - This compact size can be used for smaller subjects, such as tabletop product photography or portraits of children. It can also be used for tight headshots with careful framing.
  • 53" - A medium size, this is suitable for up to full-length portraits of a single individual and larger objects.
  • 86" - Create images with multiple people (up to three) or very large objects.
  • 107" - The largest option for many colors, this width is great for group portraits or families with room for around four people or very large objects.
  • 140" - Available for #01 Super White, #20 Black, #46 Tech Green, and #70 Storm Gray, the largest size can fit up to six people at a time for larger group photos and can be used with very large objects.
Depending on your own space and capabilities, you should consider your paper size carefully. Wider and longer rolls are heavier and can be more difficult to work with though they bring advantages to ensuring a filled background.

Savage 70 Storm Gray Reviews

Unraveling paper is difficult & frustrating

I have been buying superior seamless paper for over 5 years now. I own a studio & have bought, hung, & used well over 30 rolls of paper. As a studio owner, paper is one of my biggest frustrations in the studio. The new way that they are enforcing it from unraveling is not efficient & very frustrating. The paper tab to pull off & release it, doesn’t work. It pulls off in very small increments & when pulled off, there is still glue on the other side to undo. I do not want to undo it before getting up on a 10 foot ladder to hang it, so then once I’m up there trying to get it to undo, it’s ripping & tearing. I had to cut an entire foot off before even beginning to use this brand new roll of paper. The orange & white tape used to enforce it in the past worked fine, you can just use a scissors or razor, & boom it’s down. This is the most ridiculous thing ever. You have to fight to get the paper down, there is no reason for it to be this difficult.

Very nice look for our videos

Is there a safe way to mount this permanently on the wall without stands? Looking at options like the Manfrotto 059WM?
Asked by: Blake
If using the Manfrotto 059WM Hooks fastened to the studs of your drywall or concrete wall, it is recommended to use the Manfrotto 047-3 Alu-Core for Uncored Paper or Cloth - 12' (3.6 m), BH # MA0473 in place of the cardboard core then a Manfrotto 046MCB Expan Drive Set with Black Metal Chain, BH #MA046MCB inserted on each end of the paper in order to attach the roll to the hooks. https://bhpho.to/3R995G3 https://bhpho.to/3XGiOpv

How would you mount a 12 ft roll like this to stands? Is there a crossbar or other mounting option that would work?
Asked by: Michael
An answer above says the 140" x 100' roll weighs 52 lbs. The Impact Pro Backdrop Support Kit description says it can support loads up to 38 lbs. Doesn't sound like this stand would hold the 140" roll.

question

Can this be used with the Impact Deluxe Varipole System?
Asked by: Anurag
The Impact Varidrives included in the Impact Deluxe Varipole Support System can handle seamless rolls measuring up to 9' wide and weighing up to 22 lb. The Savage Widetone Seamless Background Paper (#20 Black, 140 x 105') is 11 ft 8 in long, and weighs 40 lbs. It would not be recommended for use with the Impact Deluxe Varipole Support System.
