NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S Lens with UV Filter Kit Overview

By B&H Photo's

Complementing the lens itself, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S Lens with UV Filter Kit from B&H bundles the versatile normal-length prime with a 62mm UV filter.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S Lens

A compact, well-versed prime, the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S from Nikon offers a normal-length field of view along with a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. The comfortable perspective pairs with the f/1.8 design to suit working in difficult lighting conditions as well as offers increased control over depth of field. The optical design includes two aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion elements, which greatly reduce both spherical and chromatic aberrations for increased sharpness and clarity. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings are used, too, to suppress flare and ghosting for greater color fidelity and higher contrast.

In terms of handling, a stepping motor provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Prime normal-length lens is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus.
Two aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable control ring can be used to intuitively adjust a variety of camera and exposure settings.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Chiaro Pro 62mm 98-UVATS UV Filter

The Pro 62mm 98-UVATS UV Filter is one of Chiaro’s highest-rated protective UV filters with 98% light transmission. It’s ideal for photographers of all levels who demand high-quality glass and other essential features for excellent image fidelity and construction.

To achieve 98% light transmission, Chiaro uses highly-polished optical glass, multi-coating, and additional advanced elements that improve the filter’s light transmission. A scratch-resistant coating minimizes scratching of the glass and helps assure that water, oil, dust, and fingerprints are removed with a gentle wipe. Its hard-anodized aluminum filter ring is designed to screw on and off effortlessly, and it is thin to prevent vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. Side knurling helps assure that you’ll have a firm grip when attaching or removing your filter.

Image quality is what matters most at Chiaro. The company has tested and combined many features and essentials to achieve superior image quality and the highest light transmission. To help take the confusion out of selecting a filter, Chiaro prominently displays the light transmission levels so that you can choose the perfect filter for your lens and photo session.

98% Light Transmission
Protecting your lens doesn't mean you have to lose optical quality. By using highly-polished optical glass and advanced coatings, Chiaro offers a 98% transmission rate, which is an excellent transmission rate for glass. And the company verifies the ratings with ISO certified lab testing.
Resistance Coating
The layers of advanced resistance coating on the filter are designed to resist moderate scratches, and allow you to easily clean your filter. Water beads up and rolls off your filter, and oil and fingerprints can come off with a gentle wipe. Dust and debris won't adhere to the filter and can be removed with a puff of air.
Polished Optical Glass
Glass that's polished to perfection is essential to achieve a high level of light transmission. The optical glass in this Chiaro filter is highly-polished for flatness that ensures excellent optical clarity.
Multi-Coating
Multi-coating enhances light transmission to the demanding level set for all Chiaro filters. It reduces unwanted internal reflections and ghosting that can compromise your images.
UV Protection
The filter blocks UV light and reduces the bluish cast of daylight that can affect color accuracy, especially at higher altitudes.
Hard Anodized Aluminum Construction
The process of hard anodizing toughens and strengthens the aluminum for a lightweight yet durable filter ring.
Slim Design
Measuring only 3.2mm, this filter is slim enough to use on wide-angle lenses without experiencing vignetting.
Top and Side Knurling
In addition to top knurling, Chiaro added side knurling to better grip the filter when you're attaching and removing it, or when you're stacking filters.
Secure Attachment
It takes two full turns to mount the filter on your lens. This feature will securely hold your Chiaro filter through the most demanding photo shoots.
Front Threads
The front threads on the filter allow you to stack filters by screwing them onto your Chiaro filter.

NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S Lens with UV Filter Kit Reviews

Great all-around lens

Excellent carry lens for vacation and street photography. Great glass is built well and very solid. For older photographers like me, it may appear a little long for a 50mm, but after you use it, you will be surprised; I love it. Just like I love the service I receive from B&H. Thanks B&H.

Recently bought a z6II with 24-200mm. Purchased this to do some everyday photos and videos. I shot a bunch of test photos and some videos and I am impressed at the quality, sharpness and detail on each mode. I plan on using it around town and some night shots.

Only $600?

When buying this lens initially, I did not think I would use it nearly as much as I have, especially being a prime. I have gone on long trips and only brought this and still came back very happy. It's really a great do-all length at 50mm. You can do portraits as well as landscape. The f/1.8 allows you to really open up and shoot in any condition, especially with how weather-proof it is. Top notch lens.

Love this lens on my Z 5

When I was assigned to photograph the wedding of a family member, I decided that my existing equipment roster needed to be upgraded. After checking a number of reviews by wedding photographers of both the Nikon Z 50mm f/1.8 S lens and the Nikon Z 50 camera, I decided that combo was just the ticket, especially since both had good sale prices. Soon after the wedding, I took an assignment to cover local news for an online publication and, then a fireworks display. I have been very impressed with the results. I am finding it difficult now to find a good reason to use any other lenses on the Z 5!

The Second Time Around

By Michael

this is the second time I purchased this lens. Te first time was back in 2018, when the Z's were first introduced. Its performance was just ok IMO. After purchasing the 50mm f/1.2 in 2021, I sold the original 1.8, as the 1.8 could not even come close. Lately though, I have found the need for a faster normal lens than the F4's currently in residence. While the f1.2 would work very well, its size and weight are a problem. Enter the 50mm f/1.8 s again. This time the performance has stepped up a notch, compared to the first time around. It has found a permanent home in my kit. Now what to do with the 50 F/1.2 s HMMM?

Absolute bargain

I generally shoot Fujifilm GFX for everything but wildlife and walkaround type photos. I own a Nikon Z9 and a Z7II for wildlife which is my hobby and passion. I have a 24-70 Nikkor Z f/2.8 that I bring with on wildlife excursions as a catchall lens for what isn't covered by my big telephotos. I have been happy with that lens, but I decided to purchase an 85mm f/1.8 for snaps of friends and family and as a very short tele to fill in the 71-99mm range. I played with ta copy of hat lens at a photo store and was blown away by the light weight and genuinely usable image quality for the price. Based on my experience with the 85 - I decided I'd grab this nifty-fifty as well. Whereas the 85 is a very good lens for the price and is a worthwhile pickup for the casual shooter looking for a portrait lens (see my review of that lens) - this 50mm f/1.8 is a no compromises must have. Kudos to Nikon on this one. Truly a bargain and a very impressive piece of kit. I can't imagine a big difference between this and the f/1.2 because this lens yields simply beautiful images from f/1.8 to f/11 (I haven't shot smaller than that). The 1.2 would need to be beyond incredible to justify itself based on this lens. This lens is very light weight and while it is certainly bigger than the F mount 50 it is still innocuous in a camera bag filled with a 100-400, 400 f/4.5 and 600 f/4. I can't say a single thing even slightly bad about it. Seriously - if you own a Nikon Z camera - just buy this.

Blown away by this lens

This is my first z lens for my z8. I previously used my f mount lenses which I thought were very good. This lens is tack sharp and with the resolution and autofocus accuracy of the Z8 images I’ve taken have blown my mind and those of my friends. They all want a Z8 with this lens now. I may have some explaining to do to their wives.

Beautiful Bokeh for Portraits & More

To start, I'm a pretty new photographer, and I got this lens specifically for the wide f/1.8 aperture - I wanted something that could take better portrait shots with more background separation, and it excels at that and a whole lot more. I personally find the 50mm to be a perfect focal length for full body portraits, but it does require you step back a good bit, and for street shots or buildings it's a little tight, but at this price I really find it to do everything I want really well.

what is the best type of lens for night sky pictures?
Asked by: Jim
Assuming you mean of the Milky Way, a prime lens around 24-35 mm for a full-frame camera. The lens needs a wide aperture to reduce ISO and good imaging performance wide open. Why prime? They are faster. Your enemy is time. The stars start to streak (meaning that their streaking is visually obvious) with greater than 30-45 second exposures. The wider the lens, the longer the exposure can be. If you are taking an image of something smaller, say a comet, then a longer focal length works. I took photos of the recent comment with 35 and 50 mm lenses.
