I invested over $3,000 in the Westcott FJ400 II lighting system because of Westcott's reputation as a professional lighting company. After approximately 15 months, one of my FJ Pro batteries suffered a complete failure. It didn't gradually lose capacity—it simply stopped charging and would no longer power any of my strobes. After troubleshooting with multiple chargers and batteries, Westcott confirmed that the battery itself had failed. Because the battery was just outside the one-year warranty, Westcott declined to replace it. While I understand a company has to have warranty policies, I was disappointed that no meaningful goodwill accommodation was offered for a professional customer who had invested thousands of dollars in their system. The only accommodation offered was a 10% discount on a replacement battery purchased directly through Westcott. To receive that discount, I was instructed to recycle my defective battery, obtain proof of disposal, and submit that documentation before receiving the discount code. My disappointment isn't just with the battery failure. Batteries can fail. My disappointment is with how the situation was handled. I expected a professional company to make a greater effort to stand behind its products and longtime customers when a component experiences an unexpected failure shortly after the warranty expires. The FJ lights themselves have performed well, but this experience has significantly reduced my confidence in both the battery system and the level of customer support I can expect in the future.
I have had the FJ400 for over a year now and have only two hours on it. When I went to use it for outside fill shots, the battery pack was dead. It will not charge. I had to buy a new one. It is a shame that nothing can be done to the almost brand new one that I originally bought. Use it or loose it!
