Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

The Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K features a 4/3" sensor for capturing up to 4096 x 2160 DCI 4K images at rates up to 75 fps in a variety of codecs including Blackmagic Raw at several bit rates and various ProRes 422 options. With the 6.6 update, the BMPCC 4K now offers up to 80 fps in a 2.8K raw mode for 4:3 anamorphic and up to 75 fps in a 4K raw mode in 2.4:1 widescreen. A 2x de-squeeze preview is available for 4:3 recording as well as a 1.33x de-squeeze option. Slow-motion rates up to 120 fps are available in 2.6K raw for Super16 lenses and in cropped Full HD. The 6.6 update makes operating easier with support for the Pocket Battery Grip and a built-in horizon level function. Further 6.6 update features include support for additional languages, USB PTP control, customizable frame guides, an up to 8x pinch-to-zoom function, the ability to embed custom LUTs as metadata in Blackmagic Raw, and more.

The Micro Four Thirds lens mount accommodates the original, lightweight Pocket Cinema Camera lenses, and can be used with PL, C, EF, and other lenses with the use of separately available adapters. A dual-native ISO up to 25,600 is featured for low-light capture, and 13 stops of dynamic range provide rich HDR images.

Record using the internal CFast 2.0 and SD/UHS-II card slots or employ the USB Type-C output for capturing longer clips to an external drive. The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K's 5" touchscreen LCD reduces the need for an external, onboard monitor, while a full-sized HDMI port enables you to output a signal to a larger display. The menu and interface are the same as the ones found on the URSA Mini camera, and 3D LUTs can be applied for monitoring or baking in your look when you're ready to commit.

Audio features include a mini-XLR input with phantom power for pro-style mics, a 3.5mm jack, and an internal stereo mic. Additional features include the same Blackmagic OS as the URSA Mini and Bluetooth remote control. A license key for DaVinci Resolve Studio is included for versatile post-production control. The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K's carbon fiber composite build provides lightweight strength and durability, and power options include running off the included Canon LP-E6 type battery or the included power supply.

Atomos Shinobi 5" 4K HDMI Monitor

The Shinobi 5" 4K HDMI Monitor is an on-camera monitor with DCI 4K, UHD 4K, and HD video input. It features a 10-bit FRC IPS screen with a brightness of 1000 cd/m², which makes it suitable for use in both exterior and interior conditions. The AtomHDR display technology allows you to accurately monitor your log gamma footage without having to view flat, washed-out looking images or use a LUT to compress the dynamic range and color space. The monitor supports popular log formats from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, ARRI, RED, and JVC cameras.

Built to withstand the rigors of production, the Shinobi features a lightweight plastic chassis and powers from a single L-series battery. Additional features include a variety of onscreen exposure analysis, framing, and focus assist tools, as well as anamorphic de-squeeze. A 12V power supply with L-series battery eliminator is included with the unit.

AtomHDR
With AtomHDR you can monitor up to ten stops of dynamic range of your camera's LOG image. Most conventional monitors can only display six or seven stops, which is fine for standard footage; but a Log image will look overly flat. It is also superior to monitoring with a loaded LUT, which can clip the highlights and mask shadows.

HDR Signal Management
Log and HDR signals can be difficult to monitor with conventional equipment. Though, with the Shinobi's built-in HDR signal management functions, the log signal can be converted to the PQ standard for compatibility with existing consumer and professional HDR equipment.

The Shinobi supports Anamorphic de-squeeze, allowing you to comfortably view anamorphic footage with a squeeze of 2x, 1.5x, 1.33, and Panasonic's 8:3.

Worked with this camera for years now and I always come back to it. Perfect camera for the price.

I'm thinking it's niche

My professional experience with the BMPCC 4k has been filming interviews and it's exceptional for that. Most of my work has been indoors though and has power nearby to run off of, just in case. The build quality of the camera is pretty good and I love that it's compact and user friendly. The sensor is where it shines and shooting in RAW has been excellent - it appears to be a significant step up from shooting on my Nikon D750 raw via a Ninja. The on board mini xlr is a plus though the internal gain can be a bit noisy and sometimes needs to run on batteries to eliminate the electronic noise picked up over the Lav. The monitor doesn't articulate or match the quality of the video being recorded, which makes me want to invest in a second monitor - but haven't. The batteries are small and last about 30 minutes, so it's important to carry a lot of batteries or get a power bank. My recommendation is to get a quality MFT lens - start with the Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 pro, there's a reason everyone recommends it. My experience with the Metabones XL .64x for Nikon is poor. It seriously degrades the quality of my Nikon glass, with significant chromatic aberration, soft comers and an off axis focal plane! I've heard it could be a quality control issue but I haven't tested other lens adapters. Besides, for only a few hundred dollars more you can buy the Olympus zoom instead of the speedbooster. The BMPCC 4k is excellent for the cost but expect to pay $500-$1000 more on batteries, an additional monitor and an MFT lens(es). Another thought is if you've got a great camera that outputs RAW over HDMI and invested in great lenses already, consider getting an external recorder monitor instead - you'll know if you need to have a BMPCC 4k. Try one out first. P.S. the BMPCC 4k does not have any internal image stabilization and it's auto focus is very simple, no focus tracking or servo. It's pretty bare bones - all about the quality of it's sensor and it's recording formats.

Pretty Good for the Price

If you want to get serious about videography but don't want to fork over couple of grand this is a good starting point. Having said that, I wish I spent the extra $700 on the 6k version. Unless you got some MFT lens already, I'd say it's not worth getting this version. Pros - Price is great for what you're getting - Good picture quality - Easy to use - Well built - Shoots in RAW which makes a HUGE difference when grading - Comes with Resolve Studio Cons - Terrible battery life. If you are shooting outside, bring A LOT of batteries with you. - Having to get a MFT adapter can be a pain and costly. - You'll need to spend a few hundred more to take this camera to the next level.

Good camera, good value, two flaws that should be addressed

My main purpose in this purchase was a good camera to attach to my ATEM Mini Pro. This camera is very good for that. But I also want to use this for outdoor run and gun situations where mobility is key, including the ability to literally run (for example, to film wildcat marches). In many ways, the camera suits that second purpose - ability to mount an XLR mic, the fact that the camera body is lightweight. But there are two issues that BlackMagic should have addressed by now in a hardware update of this model: 1) The screen is not very bright, and has a reflective surface, making it very difficult to use this camera outdoors on a bright day. (Mounting a SmallRig hood partially mitigates this issue.) 2) The camera accommodates a tiny battery that lasts only 30-40 minutes.

I love this camera. This is a perfect camera for beginners with cinema cameras. You will definitely need more batteries or a battery grip. Looks amazing for the price.

I write from Peru, very decpcionado because the purchase of my first camera black magic 4k has a problem of focus and iris with native lenses mft of panasonic, I have read that more people have also happened the same problem, and unfortunately, a friend brought me the camera from NY to PERU, and I do not know what to do to resort to some type of guarantee. Please if you could help me, preferably if I could solve this here from Peru. Thank you.

question

Any huess on how well the BMPCC 4K will work with the Panasonic Leica 100-400mm and Ronin-S?
Asked by: Kai
Two things: 1. We feel there is a strong possibly that the lens will be too long to properly balance on the Ronin S and: 2. A 100-400mm is too long a lens for a stabilizer. The problem would be keeping the subject in frame unless they are a hundred feet away. Generally, stabilizers work the most effectively with wide lenses. A lens like the Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens B&H # PA123528A would be far more appropriate.

question

I understand that this will not have continuous autofocus, but can a blackmagic design expert confirm the double tap to pull focus explained in this link?https://youtu.be/QcEnwIGYPKM?t=3m5s
Asked by: Ese M.
Double tapping zooms in on that part of the image. In previous cameras, it zoomed in on the center of frame, but now it zooms to the part you tapped on. It does not focus for you.
