Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

The Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K features a 4/3" sensor for capturing up to 4096 x 2160 DCI 4K images at rates up to 75 fps in a variety of codecs including Blackmagic Raw at several bit rates and various ProRes 422 options. With the 6.6 update, the BMPCC 4K now offers up to 80 fps in a 2.8K raw mode for 4:3 anamorphic and up to 75 fps in a 4K raw mode in 2.4:1 widescreen. A 2x de-squeeze preview is available for 4:3 recording as well as a 1.33x de-squeeze option. Slow-motion rates up to 120 fps are available in 2.6K raw for Super16 lenses and in cropped Full HD. The 6.6 update makes operating easier with support for the Pocket Battery Grip and a built-in horizon level function. Further 6.6 update features include support for additional languages, USB PTP control, customizable frame guides, an up to 8x pinch-to-zoom function, the ability to embed custom LUTs as metadata in Blackmagic Raw, and more.

The Micro Four Thirds lens mount accommodates the original, lightweight Pocket Cinema Camera lenses, and can be used with PL, C, EF, and other lenses with the use of separately available adapters. A dual-native ISO up to 25,600 is featured for low-light capture, and 13 stops of dynamic range provide rich HDR images.

Record using the internal CFast 2.0 and SD/UHS-II card slots or employ the USB Type-C output for capturing longer clips to an external drive. The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K's 5" touchscreen LCD reduces the need for an external, onboard monitor, while a full-sized HDMI port enables you to output a signal to a larger display. The menu and interface are the same as the ones found on the URSA Mini camera, and 3D LUTs can be applied for monitoring or baking in your look when you're ready to commit.

Audio features include a mini-XLR input with phantom power for pro-style mics, a 3.5mm jack, and an internal stereo mic. Additional features include the same Blackmagic OS as the URSA Mini and Bluetooth remote control. A license key for DaVinci Resolve Studio is included for versatile post-production control. The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K's carbon fiber composite build provides lightweight strength and durability, and power options include running off the included Canon LP-E6 type battery or the included power supply.

Lexar 128GB Professional 1667x UHS-II SDXC Memory Card

The 128GB Professional 1667x UHS-II SDXC Memory Card from Lexar features a storage capacity of 128GB and takes advantage of the UHS-II bus to support advanced DSLR functions such as continuous shutter bursts and rapid shooting, as well as raw and JPEG captures. This card is also well-suited for video capture, including 4K, 3D, and Full HD video, and can achieve maximum read speeds of up to 250 MB/s and maximum write speeds of up to 120 MB/s. Thanks to its V60 speed class rating, minimum write speeds are guaranteed not to drop below 60 MB/s.

UHS-II cards achieve their speed through an extra row of pins and while this card has been designed for cameras that are UHS-II / V60 compatible, it may be used in devices that do not support UHS-II / V60. However, bear in mind that this card will then default to your device's speed class and bus rating, such as UHS-II and V30, which supports minimum write speeds of 30 MB/s, or UHS-I and U3, which also supports minimum write speeds of 30 MB/s. If your device does not support U3, this card is compatible with the U1 and Class 10 standards, each of which guarantee minimum write speeds of 10 MB/s.

To help protect against accidental file deletion, there is a built-in write protect switch. To further safeguard against possible data loss, users can download free Image Rescue software that is designed to recover most photo and video files.

High-speed performance-leverages UHS-II technology (U3) for a data read speed up to 1667x (250 MB/s)

Pocket Cinema Camera 4K Kit with 2 x Batteries, Dual Charger & 2 x SD Cards Reviews

Great camera and easy to use

By Shawn

I have had a really good experience with this camera in the first month I've had it. It was recommended to me by a friend as I was looking to upgrade from an older DSLR. It's really simple to use and easy to get the hang of. The biggest downside has been the battery life, which has me changing out batteries after 30-50 minutes depending on what I'm working on. The videos and photos have turned out great and Davinci Resolve Studio, it's easy to edit and export what I'm working on. I would recommend this for people looking to make a serious upgrade, who need a reliable but easy to use camera for day-to-day video projects and have something that's easy to use on the go.

So far so good!

I'm new to BMPCC and I'm using the cam for streaming. I love that I can control the image via the BM software. This is fantastic for getting two cams to look similar. Highly recommended. I also recommend picking up whatever adaptors you need to make your old lenses compatible with this Micro Four Thirds (M4/3) camera. I was new to M4/3 but I can now use all my lenses with it.

Hidden Problem

All the things that everyone says are great about this camera are, indeed, great. HOWEVER. There is one sneaky issue I have never heard anyone talk about. Because this is a cinema camera it does not correct for lens distortion present in photo lenses. So, you slap the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 on this baby and it is going to fisheye at 12mm. Put that same lens on a GH5 - boom! - no distortion. Yes, you can remove the distortion in post but... you don't want to be the fix it in post guy, do you? So, unless you want to be adjusting for lens distortion in post, you need to buy cinema lenses for this cinema camera.

Our camera 1 for our first season which is now camera 2 and the new one is Camera 3. We replaced 1 with a BM Studio Pro (another great buy) for season 2. We also use the Atom extreme iso. All incredible!

Does it have autofocus?
Asked by: Mandi
The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K in the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K Kit with 2 x Batteries, Dual Charger & 2 x SD Cards does have an auto focus feature, but it is a fairly basic version of autofocus, as it only pulls focus to what is in the center of the fram when the focus button is pushed. If you need autofocus that can track or determine what to focus on in a more advanced way you would likely find other brands to be a better fit.

question

Any huess on how well the BMPCC 4K will work with the Panasonic Leica 100-400mm and Ronin-S?
Asked by: Kai
Two things: 1. We feel there is a strong possibly that the lens will be too long to properly balance on the Ronin S and: 2. A 100-400mm is too long a lens for a stabilizer. The problem would be keeping the subject in frame unless they are a hundred feet away. Generally, stabilizers work the most effectively with wide lenses. A lens like the Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens B&H # PA123528A would be far more appropriate.

question

I understand that this will not have continuous autofocus, but can a blackmagic design expert confirm the double tap to pull focus explained in this link?https://youtu.be/QcEnwIGYPKM?t=3m5s
Asked by: Ese M.
Double tapping zooms in on that part of the image. In previous cameras, it zoomed in on the center of frame, but now it zooms to the part you tapped on. It does not focus for you.
