Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Overview

Presenting impressive reach in a relatively compact design, the Leica L-mount 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary lens, from Sigma, is a versatile telephoto zoom mixing a hand-holdable design with apt optical performance. A series of low dispersion glass elements are used to achieve high clarity and color accuracy throughout the zoom range, and to suppress chromatic aberrations and color fringing. As part of the Contemporary line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance between convenience and performance, and meshes a compact, lightweight build and versatile handling with notable optical attributes.
Telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras, but can also work with APS-C models where it provides a 150-600mm equivalent focal length range.
One F Low Dispersion (FLD) element and four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements markedly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Optical image stabilization compensates for up to four stops of camera shake to help realize sharp imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds.
Integrated stepping motor realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance.
At the 100mm end of the zoom range, a minimum focusing distance of 3.7' is available, and at the 400mm end, the minimum focusing distance is 5.2' with a maximum magnification of 1:4.1.
Integrated AFL button can be programmed to adjust various shooting settings and the lens also features a focus limiter switch for faster focusing performance within certain distance ranges. There is a zoom lock switch to prevent the barrel from accidentally extended.
Rounded 9-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity and rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount's design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
Compatible with optional TS-111 Tripod Socket for working atop a tripod or monopod; the included PT-31 Protective Cover can be attached to the lens to maintain a seamless appearance if the tripod socket is not used.
Compatible with optional Sigma TC-1411 1.4x and TC-2011 2x teleconverters.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma UD-11 USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Very sharp. Won't have to spend $1500 more for comparable camera brand lens.

Exceeded Expectations

I took my new A7 III and this lens to a local park. Despite less than ideal conditions (Dim light), I was able to get decent pics even though I had to shoot through glass in the Window on Wildlife. Tack sharp focus on a hummingbird. I would upload the image but the ISO was too high making it grainy (Lesson learned!)

All components are high quality and the lens is sharp

I purchased this to replace another brand 70-300mm lens that was used as a multipurpose zoom, but that did not do anything well. But this Sigma checks all my boxes. It is adequate for some small close wildlife and wide enough for portraits while producing pleasing bokeh. The sharpness is stunning and the autofocus pairs well with my Sony A74. I am able to shoot hand held in low light at slower shutter speeds than I expected. Try it.

Sigma 100-400mm gets it done

Not bad. Slowish f stop but bump up ISO and shoot at f11-f14 and there's some depth of field at 400mm. Pretty well built for the price. Paired with Sony's A7c holding out for the shot is not difficult.

Ideal size and weight for me

I have been carrying a Sigma 150-500 for several years, and it reaches very well for birds in Florida. But many locations I get to don't need that much reach, but are beyond my 90mm. The 100-400 fills the gap in weight and size for my aging body allowing longer excursions for wildlife. The sharpness and focus speed are excellent on my A7Riii.

If you find yourself wanting more range past the traditional 70-200mm range, this is a great option to consider. I myself found myself shooting at 200mm, which led me to believe I would benefit from having more range. This zoom range is quite versatile, and suites nearly any aspect of photography to some degree. The image quality is good for the price, and for less than half of the price of the direct competitor, the Sony G-master, I'd certainly recommend this lens and save the money for another entire lens. I also considered the 150-600mm, but this lens is a perfect balance of super-telephoto and relative size as compared to other ultra-telephotos, which are excessively large, plus if you are really desperate, you can always throw your camera in crop mode and get up to 600mm.

lovely lens!

i was contemplating between the 100-400 and the 150-600. I had a tamron 150-600 on my Nikon and loved the range, but the combined weight made for some planning for a shoot and not a grab and go session. The 100-400 is a great lens! Very sharp at 400 wide open and the stabilizer works great. Zooming is smooth, 2 setting focus limiter is helpful. Coupled with my panasonic S5, i'm very happy with the images this combination produces. AF feels fast and secure. Haven't tested w/ BIF yet. Turning the camera on and off, the lens will produce an audible noise - sigma says it's normal. the OS mechanism starting up/down. Some sample images. All are SOOC with slight exposure tweaking. The wabbit was at 1/40th wide open.
