Thanks! Can you recommend a 5x7 white backdrop or scrim that's translucent enough for backlighting and similarly easy to transport and set up? I'm looking for a smaller, cheaper, simpler alternative to a Manfrotto Hi-Lite. Been using the translucent white core of a Westcott 42" 6-in-1 reflector disk set for tight headshots, but want something bigger.

For the pure white (non-reversible) is it translucent enough to place a flash behind it to get a really white background?
Yes, in order to achieve a solid white color, you would need to place two lights in front of the background and make them at least 2 stops brighter than the light on the subject.

Is it possible to just buy the bag that the backdrop lives in?
The only case we list in our inventory to storea a 5x7' collapsible background would be the Savage Carry Bag for 5 x 7' Collapsible Background (28"), B&H # SACBBAG57. How do you keep this upright? Do you hang it or put it on a stand?
I usually lean it against a wall but will use a couple of small light stands at times, especially if no wall available at the location.

Has anyone found a smart way to fly with this?? I've checked it with just the bag it comes in but it's getting a little beat up so I'd love a padded sleeve at least. Asking for a friend.
If you're looking to add an extra layer of protection within the case, I would personally recommend a heavy duty (flattened) cardboard box or corrugated shipping pads, which can be found at any office supply store. It won't add significant weight and can help shield the backdrop in the case.
