I was a little apprehensive about the purchasing having read mixed reviews but I took a chance. Currently I am using it on my Nikon Z 180mm-600mm, my concern was loss of sharpness, image quality autofocus lag and a 1-stop light loss. I am happy to report that I am not seeing any of those initial concerns, the 1 stop is really not a big deal as I used it to shoot the strawberry moon and it came out perfect. I may be overlooking certain potential issues, but they don't seem to jump right out during photography or stick out in post processing. I can honestly say I am extremely pleased with the results and happy I added this to my arsenal, the 840mm reach is awesome. So my recommendation is go for it and see how it works for you!!

Great addition to my 600mm prime and my 100-400mm zoom

Two lenses I've added to my lineup this year are Nikon's 600mm f/6.3 prime lens, and their 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 zoom lens, This TC-1.4x is a wonderful upgrade for both lenses. It extends my 600mm prime to 840mm, and allows me to achieve DX mode "magnified" shots optically, rather than digitally. I can now shoot in FX mode and have small birds fill the frame, which means I can print them at larger sizes than photos shot in DX mode. The Z8's Autofocus Bird Mode works flawlessly with the TC-1.4x. Much of my photography is of wildflowers, shot at a distance so that I don't scare any pollinators away, and for this I use the 100-400mm zoom. The TC-1.4x increases the magnification factor of the 100-400mm zoom from 0.38 to 0.532, which makes this lens even better at shooting closeups from a distance. It also increases the maximum focal length to 560mm, which make this lens more versatile for bird photography. Cons: The TC-1.4x increases your original lens's maximum aperture by one f stop. Because I use both lenses every day, I may need a second TC-1.4x on a second camera body, to have both ready simultaneously. I've attached 6 photos, all shot with the TC-1.4x: 3 birds shot with the 600mm prime, and 3 wildflowers shot with 100-400mm zoom.

Does this TC-1.4x impact the sharpness, autofocus speed and low light photography of the Nikon Z 400mm f4.5S for birds?

All teleconverters impact sharpness, autofocusing speed and definitely light regardless of the lens. However the Nikon Z 1.4X teleconverter does an impressive job of keeping the degradation to a minimum, it's barely noticeable. The autofocus speed will also work great. The only thing you'll actually notice is the stop loss in light, dropping the f/4.5 aperture to f/6.3.

The Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-1.4x is for Z-mount mirrorless lenses and can't be used with the Nikon FTZ adapter. If you have a compatible F-mount telephoto lens, you can use the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III. You can find the lens and the compatibility list here: https://bhpho.to/3YR8SN8.

After extensive testing, Digital Camera World determined that the Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-1.4x (BH #NIZTC14) may cause a slight if typically imperceptible drop in central sharpness while increasing corner sharpness.

As of the date/time of this reply, according to Nikon's website, the Nikon Z Teleconverter TC-1.4x is only listed as compatible for use with the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S Lens. It is not compatible for use with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR Lens.

No, minimal focal distance does not change maximum reproduction of ratio change increasing by the same factor as the teleconverter.
